It's a 1-game lead with 2 games to play. The Yankees beat a dead Red Sox team last night while the Orioles lost to a Rays team that was on life support. The big joke about the Boston Red Sox these days is that they are actually the Pawtucket Red Sox. Six players in last night's Boston lineup started 2012 in triple A. Meanwhile, the Yankees had their full lineup in the game, something that hasn't happened in over a month. That was one reason why they smashed 4 home runs in the second inning, including one by Mark Teixeira. If Teixeira had been the only Yankee to homer last night, I'd have been just as ecstatic. His return to the lineup is such a powerful boost to the team. Two games left! If the Yankees win tonight and the Orioles lose, the division belongs to the Yankees. But, knowing the Orioles that is not likely to happen, especially since the Rays have been eliminated. (Thanks for nothing, A's.) Joe Maddon has promised to do the right thing and put his A-team...

Your Morning Dump...where Pedroia's done for the year (unless he isn't)

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Pedroia did not play versus the Yankees on Monday, but other than joking about what ailed him -- "What's wrong with me? A lot of things. I'm [expletive] up in the head" -- he did not discuss...

Yankees Game 160 Lineup: 10/01/12

New York will send C.C. Sabathia to the mound tonight in game one of a three-game set against the Boston Red Sox. In his last outing against the Minnesota Twins, Sabathia tossed eight strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out ten for the win. Mark Teixeira is back in the lineup tonight. Right-hander Clay Buchholz (11-7, 4.22 ERA) is on the mound for Boston...

Did Sabathia pitch too long Monday?

"One game at a time." It is a mantra of baseball managers, an approach that enables them to focus on the one thing that they can control -- the game in front of them -- without worrying about other concerns. "One game at a time." The Yankees' Joe Girardi -- in a decision that was curious at best, dangerous at worst -- used precisely that rationale for extending...

Teixeira expected to return to Yankees Monday

First baseman Mark Teixeira is expected to rejoin the New York Yankees on Monday, manager Joe Girardi said Sunday. "We expect to see him in New York on Monday," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He'll see the doctor tomorrow and see if he's cleared to play." Teixeira has missed the past 20 games and 30 of the past 31 with a strained left calf. ...

T Minus 1: Yanks Win, O's Win

Whew! It didn't look good there for a while. The Yankees were down 2-0 to Jon Lester before they even came to bat. By the late innings they had 10 hits but just 1 run. They were still trailing going into the ninth inning, and were 0-58 on the season when trailing in that final frame. But Raul Ibanez saved the day with his clutch hits, and the Yankees still have a 1-game lead...

At least some guys are having fun in the clubhouse

h/t KWAPT That lovely photo came through David Ortiz's twitter page yesterday. I'm not sure what brought this on or if it is a part of an on-going joke, but it gets a chuckle. We now know that Jose Iglesias, Pedro Ciriaco, and Mauro Gomez will make awful women. We also know that Mauro Gomez needs to do some crunches. I guess it is good to dress up like cheerleaders and have...

Sunshine In The Cellar: Lessons The Red Sox Can Take From 1992

The 1992 Red Sox were a last-place train wreck, but amidst the wreckage emerged future MVP Mo Vaughn. It’s been a long time since Boston Red Sox fans have seen a season like the one that will come to a merciful end on Wednesday night in Yankee Stadium. It’s more than just the franchise’s first losing season since 1997. It’s the first 90-loss season since 1966. But I think...

Westborough Furniture-Maker Finds Way to Get David Ortiz's Presence Into New Yankee Stadium After Jersey Removed

As far as jinxes go, this one probably didn't do much. But it should still put a smile on hardy Red Sox fans' faces after a year to forget. The most enduring memory for most Red Sox fans from the building of the new Yankee Stadium in the Bronx was the news that a surreptitious construction worker had buried a David Ortiz jersey in the concrete deep within the new park. When...

Fractured finger can't keep Pedroia out of lineup

Broken finger? No problem for Dustin Pedroia. Despite being diagnosed one day earlier with an avulsion fracture of his left ring finger, Pedroia got medical clearance and talked his way into the last-place Boston Red Sox's lineup Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. "I love playing, man. It's fun," Pedroia said. "I get to compete for two more games, and then...

Red Sox Cautious With Wrist Injuries to Will Middlebrooks, Daniel Nava After Carl Crawford Woes

Wrist issues have plagued Red Sox players this season. In early August, the team placed Daniel Nava on the disabled list with a sprained wrist. Nearly a week after, Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks broke his wrist when he was drilled by a fastball. Middlebrooks was making strides toward recovery this week, taking his first swings off a tee since the injury. He's able to...

Bobby Valentine injured while texting and riding his bicycle

It’s been a long first season with the Red Sox for Bobby Valentine. He has encountered issue after issue almost from the day he took over in Boston. So it’s fitting that his final days of his first season included him ending up in a ditch after falling off his bicycle in a texting and cycling accident. Valentine was busy reading a text message from Red Sox second baseman Dustin...

Red Sox News & Notes - 10/2

Apparently, the season is over for the Boston Red Sox. And with the way things have been going, it looks like it's been over for a long while now. They've had the perfect chance to play spoiler over the final three weeks of the season. But they haven't done diddly squat in that department. Using what amounts to a spring training lineup against one of the most powerful...

Small Bird Evades Multiple Attempts at Capture After Interrupting Red Sox-Yankees Game (Animation)

The Yankees are battling the Orioles for the AL East, but on Tuesday night, it was a different kind of bird that proved the most meddlesome. A small bird interrupted the 12th inning of the Yankees' game against the Red Sox, when it settled near second base and refused to leave. When a Yankees Stadium groundskeeper came out to corral it with a bucket, the bird was able to escape...

Will Josh Beckett be remembered as the villain in Boston?

For Red Sox fans, this season cannot end soon enough. Decimated by injuries, plagued by constant turmoil and negative news stories, declines by formerly good pitchers and a manager controversy that never ended all mark a season that started off on the wrong foot and ended without any legs at all. Every bad situation needs a scapegoat. There has to be a villain in a story like this...

Man: Ex-Red Sox employee abused me

Another man came forward Tuesday to accuse a now-dead Boston Red Sox clubhouse manager of sexually abusing him.
