Overshadowed, perhaps, by the Tampa Bay Rays' recent run of poor fielding is their recent run of poor hitting.

They managed only four hits in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium, running their streak of games without double-digit hits to 12. That is the longest streak of its kind in the major leagues this season.

The Rays are batting .179 during that run and have lost seven of the 12 games.

Wednesday's loss, the Rays seventh in their last 10 games, dropped them out of a first-place tie with the Orioles and down to third place, a position they haven't occupied since April 23.

"We have not been the best hitting team as of late," manager Joe Maddon said. "I cannot argue that."

Ben Zobrist, 0-for-4, saw his average dropped to .199.

Carlos Pena is batting .200.

Jose Molina (.183) and Hideki Matsui (.125) are the other Rays hitting under .200 who were in Wednesday's lineup.

"We just have to get some of the guys going. We have to get Zo going, of course, and Carlos going, of course, and Scotty, etcetera," Maddon said.

Scotty is Luke Scott, who is batting .222 but didn't play Wednesday.

The current slump has dropped the team batting average to .233.

"I don't think anyone in here is really pressing," B.J. Upton said. "It's a long year, and we have to go out there and grind it out every day. We're pretty good at bouncing back. That's what we have to do right now. Come out swinging the bats a little better, but we'll find a way, and hopefully we can turn it around sooner rather than later."
