New York Mets catcher Josh Thole left last night’s dramatic 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies after experiencing dizziness and  headaches following his eighth-inning collision at home plate with former Met Ty Wigginton.

Following the victory, New York Mets assistant general manager John Ricco said Thole was being evaluated to find out whether he had a concussion or not:

He’s with the doctor and trainers right now. They are looking at all the protocols that are in place for evaluating to whether he had a concussion or not. He’s alert and I was talking to him, but he’s still undergoing evaluation for that. …He said he was a little bit dizzy, he was a little bit hot. I really didn’t get into any of the details with the doctor. I let him do his job.”

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Thole is heading back to NY to be examined by team doctors:

Rubin adds to his blog that Rob Johnson would be the “natural choice to be brought to Philly.” Johnson, who was activated from the DL last week, is hitting .291 with two home runs in 55 at-bats for Triple-A Buffalo:

While it seems as if Josh is destined to find himself on the DL — MLB added a seven-day disabled list this year for concussed players — Ruben Tejada was placed on the 15-day DL Monday afternoon with a strained right quadriceps, which he suffered on Sunday afternoon during a fourth-inning face plant.

According to Rubin:

Tejada had a significant cut on his left cheek Monday, but there are no current concerns about vision issues or a concussion. He said he fell as a result of the quadriceps injury — not the opposite, that awkwardly falling caused him to be injured.”

Assistant general manager John Ricco added the following, according to Rubin:

The MRI yesterday confirmed the initial diagnosis of a right quad strain He was feeling a little bit better today, but still feeling something in the quad, which confirmed what the MRI showed. These strains can linger. Rather than run the risk of him trying to come back too soon because he sees the team playing short, shut him down, let him recover and get some therapy, and we’ll see where we are in 15 days.”

For earlier reports on Tejada,

Exactly how long Tejada will be out is not yet known, but according to Mike Puma of the New York Post, a trip to the DL seems likely:

Tejada, on the other hand, apparently thinks otherwise:

The Mets would struggle to fill Tejada’s void both in the field and at the plate as the 22-year-old has been on fire of late with 16 hits in his last 38 at-bats (.421 avg).

Beyond that, with Ronny Cedeno on the disabled list and not due to return till Friday at the earliest, the Mets would likely have to turn to rookie Jordanny Valdespin at short if a trip to the DL is required for Tejada.

Jordany Valdespin will be in Philly, awaiting word whether Tejada is placed on DL, I’m told May 6, 2012 5:27 pm via EchofonReplyRetweetFavorite @AdamRubinESPN Adam Rubin

Tejada has been fun to watch all year and with the way he’s been handling the bat I’ve begun to rethink what his ceiling as a hitter might be.  Right now all we can do is hope for the best but it’s tough to be optimistic when it comes to injuries and the Mets.  The one thing the front office has done since Spring Training is consistently err on the side of caution and while that approach may not get a player on the field the quickest, it will hopefully keep them there when they return.
