Everyone can dry those tears and stop taking the meds for Tek withdrawl, because Beckett's go-to man is back...at least for the spring. Varitek had recently expressed his desire to return to Boston and how it would be his ideal situation. He got his wish and he will have to work his ass off to prove he still has something left in the tank.
Jon Heyman of cbssports.com reported Friday that the Sox have offered their long-time captain a non-roster invitation to spring training "with only an outside chance of making the team". Heyman said the move was made "out of respect for the iconic Varitek", and that he is being seen as "protection" in case of injury to Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Kelly Shoppach. The Sox, reported Heyman, "would love [Varitek] to work for the team in a non-playing capacity once his career is over".So he is an insurance policy that the Sox will likely cancel sooner than later. At least they are giving him a shot, whether it is out of respect or not. Welcome back, Tek...for now.
