moreland 240x300 Texas Rangers: Are Chris Davis and Mitch Moreland being showcased as trade bait?

As Cactus League play enters the halfway point, the Texas Rangers appear to be showcasing two of their top prospects as trade bait, first basemen Chris Davis and Mitch Moreland.

Both players have had moments of outstanding play in their time with Texas, but neither have proven at this point in their careers to be the type of everyday first baseman Nolan Ryan and Jon Daniels are looking for.

But make no mistake, there is substantial interest for both.

Davis recently commented to a Rangers beat writer he wants to be traded if there is not an every day role in the cards for him in Arlington, echoing similar sentiments from Rangers’ long-time captain and defensive mainstay, Michael Young.

If Davis continues to mash the way he has so far this spring, Jon Daniels may want to re-think his stance on the 25 year old Longview native.

So far in Cactus League play, Davis is hitting a whopping .389 with six doubles, three homers and 11 runs batted in over 36 at bats.

If there isn’t room for Chris Davis in Arlington someone will be happy to take him off of Jon Daniels’ hands.

What about Mitch Moreland?

Where does he stand with the Rangers organization?

With the signing of Mike Napoli as a free agent and Michael Young’s apparent move to first, Moreland’s future is more murky than it would have appeared after his solid performance in the 2010 post-season.

Moreland is a liability against left-handed pitching, keeping him from being an everyday option for Ron Washington at this point in his career and likely relegating him to stints at AAA Round Rock during the course of the summer.

With the addition of Napoli and the conversion of Young to first base, it would make sense that Jon Daniels and the Rangers organization would showcase Moreland along with Davis in an effort to get quality young talent in return.

After all, Jon Daniels reputation has been built on risky, but solid trades which provide added value over the course of time.

There is no reason to believe that he would not consider the same with Chris Davis and Mitch Moreland being core pieces on the block.
