It was a big night for the Texas Rangers as they made the trip over to South Chicago to take on the White Sox Friday evening. Texas entered the game 74-53 on the season, 2.5 games above the Athletics in the AL West. Friday’s game was the annual Civil Rights Game, a tradition which started in 2007. Once a year one game is selected as the Civil Rights Game during which special recognition is given to those players from diverse backgrounds. The sort of light-hearted event where you could expect amiable interactions between players, fans, coaches, and officials. Was it? Yes and no. Yes The return home of former White Sox superstar A.J. Pierzynski was certainly something to celebrate for Chicago fans early in the game. The video scoreboard played a Pierzynski highlight real as his name was announced with the starting lineups. No In the third inning Ian Kinsler hit a well struck line drive down the left field line. As Kinsler was rounding first the ball snuck under the padding along the wall behind third base. The left fielder, Dayan Vicideo, threw his arms up in the air signaling that the ball was unreachable. The third base line official, however, did not agree and signaled that the ball was live. Dayan was able to locate the ball under the padding, pull it out, and throw it home just in time to watch Kinsler skip into the dugout with a satisfying inside the park home run. Manager Robin Ventura came out to discuss the play with the officials and soon became frustrated when the umpires refused to amend their call. He was shortly ejected from the game. Yes The return to Chicago for number 51, Alex Rios, was reason to celebrate. Rios commented when asked about his participation in the 2013 Civil Rights Game, “We as ballplayers, we have a great deal of diversity. We have players from all kinds of places and races, and that helped us be where we are right now. It brings some diversity together and it’s good to be a part of it.” No Ron Washington decided to start Adam Rosales at DH instead of Jurickson Profar. Washington claimed that it had nothing to do with Profar’s current slump in which he has gone 25-119. Rosales was 4-7 with a home run against Sox pitcher Chris Sale upon entering this game. He exited the game with one more home run on that record as he took Sale deep to left field in the second inning. Other News Mitch Moreland homered in the eighth inning as a pinch hitter. Adrian Beltre hit his 27th home run of the season. Jeff Baker hit his 10th home run of the season Poll Obviously White Sox manager Robin Ventura was very upset with the call regarding Ian Kinsler’s inside the park home run where the ball bounced into the padding of the wall in right field.
