Luis Castillo’s nine-day tryout with the Philadelphia Phillies is officially over. The Phillies announced that they have released the 35-year old second baseman, who was signed to a one-year, $414,000 deal a little over a week ago to replace five-time All-Star second baseman Chase Utley, who will begin the season on the disabled list with knee tendinitis. Castillo started off his tryout with the Phillies by failing to report for the first day of camp He was hitless in his first game. And the next. Castillo hit just .237 in spring training and apparently didn’t impress general manager Ruben Amaro Jr to earn the club’s final roster spot. He will likely be replaced by a combination of Wilson Valdez and Michael Martinez. Castillo could still be signed by any team throughout the season but if he couldn’t beat out a bunch of no-namers on the Phillies, he probably won’t be playing in the major leagues any longer.
