My friend has completed a cycle of 28 winters and as is custom we got together to enjoy drink, song, and women. We got a fairly late start to the festivities as I was being lame and updating this site. We still celebrated with panache. As the night progressed we got the order mixed up and we started to enjoy song, women and drink, then it was drink, drink and drink. Either way it was a good night that had serious repercussions on my head the next day. Dehydration is a *****. Last night I heard rumors of a mythical Javier Baez blast that was having serious repercussions as North Korea mistook the blast as an act of aggression by the sovereign state of the Chicago Cubs. At least I think I heard that, it’s entirely possible that the Kim Jong Un speech I heard in my head declaring Baez an enemy of the state was a figment of an overactive imagination that was working overdrive. I’d like to think not. As the revelry got out of hand late last night and I lost control of my conscious mind and my primal subconscious took over I forgot all about the act of war Baez committed on domestic soil and turned my attention to other, more basic needs. That held true until I saw a small update on Facebook that was accompanied by a grainy video. Cubs Notes: Video of Baez HR, MLB Draft update, thoughts on yesterday’s games Suddenly the memories of a potential conflict with the PRK restarted in my mind and I sat down to watch what the fuss was all about. I fainted at the swing. I am attempting to reconcile a thought in my brain. It’s an ongoing struggle of brutality and beauty. Can something so utterly brutal, so vicious ever truly be beautiful? Can you find beauty in an act so primal that it tickles the most prehistoric parts of your brain? It’s a question that I have no answer to, perhaps it’s merely an attempt to excuse the neanderthal part of my brain that desires to see blood and gore. The part that loves struggle and conflict. Alas, this video falls into the “beautiful brutality” category. Baez has a swing that is fluid and smooth right up until contact is made. When the bat meets the ball it suddenly switches from being a wonderful orgy of art into a basic act of violence. And it’s fascinating to watch. His swing is unique in how simple it seems through the ball. Baez has an ability to make murder look pleasing to the eye but make no mistake; what he did to that ball is just wrong. I love him for it.
