We’re still in April, but by season’s end you’ll be hard-pressed to find a stranger baseball score than Astros 16, Mariners 9 at Safeco Field on Tuesday night. First off, it was a cold night in a pitcher’s park with two inept offenses. And not even that basic descriptor does this thing justice. Games like this are what give Tim Kurkijan a mega-boner. To wit: - The first six pitchers who faced the Astros this year set or tied their career highs for strikeouts in a single game. Houston struck out 82 times in its first seven games, which is a totally mind-boggling pace. - The Astros scored a total of nine runs in their six-game losing streak leading up to Tuesday night. They had nine runs by the end of the second inning against Seattle. - Houston racked up 22 hits against the Mariners. They had 24 total in their previous seven games. - Astros starter Erik Bedard didn’t allow a run and still didn’t win despite being spotted a 12-0 lead. How? He only pitched four innings, one shy of qualifying for the win as a starter. Manager Bo Porter pulled the plug early because Bedard had so many long waits in the dugout before going back out to the mound — surely a problem that doesn’t figure to be recurring this year. - Not all news was good news for Houston. First baseman Brett Wallace still couldn’t make contact with the watermelons being tossed by the M’s Tuesday night, striking out four times for the Golden Sombrero. Wallace has 17 strikeouts in his 21 at-bats this season, which needless to say is a new record. Wallace is now batting .048.
