Jake Arrieta is going to be a nice addition to someone's staff when he finally signs. Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

This past week, the Milwaukee Brewers would trade for Miami’s Christian Yelich. But about 30 minutes later, they would pen Lorenzo Cain to a 5-year contract worth $80 million. But team owner Mark Attanasio hints that they aren’t done yet.

You can never have enough pitching and (general manager) David (Stearns) is working on it.

But how did the rebuilding Brewers go from surprise 86-game winners to wanting to content so quickly? Attanasio explains.

Attanasio said there was a meeting of the front office brain trust in October and the decision was made that 2018 was just as important as 2020 in this rebuild. Thus, Yelich and Cain (and it sounds like more to come).

Despite the Brewers sending a nice package of prospects to the Marlins, their farm is still strong. Plus there’s still money to go around. Right now, their payroll projects to be in the $85 million range. Yu Darvish or Jake Arrieta jumps that up considerably, but the flexibility is there. On the surface, Milwaukee has too many ML-ready outfielder. But Stearns doesn’t see it that way.

With SP Jimmy Nelson on the shelf, the Brewers rotation is lacking. But if they can trade from depth, who knows? Moreover, if Milwaukee lands someone like Yu Darvish or Jake Arrieta… watch out. The offense is there, now it’s just about adding a couple more pieces. And yet, still having plenty for the future.
