When Chase Utley complained on Sunday about all of the speculation in the media about his condition, it struck me as funny. Here’s a guy who never speaks about anything, and wouldn’t even tell anyone what specialist he was going to see last week when he left camp, and now he wants to complain because people are talking about him.

With a player as beloved as Chase Utley is, you’d think he or at least the Phillies organization would realize that people are going to be worried and agonize over the condition of a player who has meant as much to this city as Chase Utley has. Chase Utley has epitomized Philadelphia for the past 8 years. Fans have come to respect and look up to him for his work ethic and his ability. In Philadelphia, our sports heroes are family. Of course we care, and when you think about it, Utley should be grateful people care about him at all.

At the same time, you also have to wonder if the thought ever has crossed Utley’s mind to be even slightly more open to the media and the fans. If he was, maybe people would spend more time discussing the real issue at hand, and less time speculating wildly about what Utley’s future may hold. As Todd Zolecki of MLB.com pointed out today on 94 WIP’s morning show, Ryan Howard has been rehabbing from a major injury as well. However, there hasn’t been consistent crazy speculation about Howard because the first baseman has done a good job of talking to the press and keeping people informed of his progress. If Utley were a bit more open, he wouldn’t have to worry about what people say.

In the end, it is Utley’s body and Utley’s career, and it is his right to handle it any way he wishes to. He can continue to be silent, and set people off on wild goose chases, trying to predict when Utley may call it quits or need surgery, or he could maybe give us a little something more.

After all, the fans are paying that hefty $15 million salary he is collecting. Maybe it’s not our right to know, but it is the courteous thing to do.
