Iowa Brett Jackson is relevant because of his slugging. In the last 3 games he has 3 HR's and a bunch of strikeouts like always. His average is in the 200's his OBP in the 300's but he is slugging over .500 and thats not a bad thing to have. Josh Vitters went 1-3 and is now batting .287 on the year. The guys over at Cubs Den were looking at some numbers the other day and while Vitters looks at very few pitches per AB he also almost never swings outside of the zone. He seems to be selectively aggressive which is what you want to have. He also has a very high contact rate for pitches in the zone which is another good sign.   Smokies Suspended Daytona same Peoria When I saw that Peoria had scored 12 runs I was hoping 8 of them came from Javier Baez but sadly he only went 1-5 with a run scored. Most of the damage was caused by Zeke DeVoss who was 1-3 with a HR and 2 BB and his 17th SB to boot. Dustin Geiger also had a game going 1-4 with a HR. On the pitching side Yao Lin Wa...

Prospects who might be called up soon, part 1

We're very close to the time of the season at which the Cubs guarantee that Anthony Rizzo, Brett Jackson and other prospects who could be called up won't become super-two players. While the first game after the all-star break happens to be that date this season, it's highly unlikely any prospect called up now would qualify. So who are the Cubs going to call up over the...

Anthony Rizzo Debut game thread and live chat

In case you hadn't heard, Anthony Rizzo is making his debut with the Cubs today. Since this is probably the lone highlight of the season, let's do a live chat! In case you weren't around last time, or your memory is as bad as mine, let me remind you Mini post about posting: IF YOUR COMMENT DOES NOT APPEAR RIGHT AWAY, DON'T PANIC CoverItLive kind of sucks in that...

The Beginning Of The Anthony Rizzo Era And Some Storify

There have been rumblings for awhile now that the Cubs wanted to call up their star prospect, first baseman Anthony Rizzo. Now it seems the Cubs are finally ready. Rizzo is supposed to be called up Tuesday although he is unlikely to face Johan Santana, which is completely understandable. I don’t think I’d want my young lefty getting owned in his first major league game. But it’s...

Game 74 Thread - Wells vs. Gee

It was nice of the Cubs to start Wells to temper any real expectation we may have had for tonight's game. Mets Cubs *Nieuwenhuis, CF *Rizzo, CF Tejada, SS Rizzo, SS Wright, 3B *Rizzo, 1B *Duda, RF Rizzo, LF *Davis, 1B *Rizzo, RF Hairston, LF *Rizzo, 3B *Murphy, 2B Rizzo, 2B *Thole, C *Rizzo, C Gee, P Rizzo, P As everyone knows by now, Anthony Rizzo has...

The Upside of Anthony Rizzo

Last season, Anthony Rizzo, then in the Padres organization, absolutely bombarded Pacific Coast League pitching to the tune of .331/.404/.632 with 26 long balls in 413 plate appearances. However, once he reached the big leagues, the mammoth production halted. In 153 plate appearances for the Friars, Rizzo hit .141/.281/.242 with only one home run and a 30-percent strikeout rate....

Report: Tigers among six teams teams in discussion (still) for Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Garza

Please stop me if you’ve heard this before… The Tigers have reportedly once again reopened discussions for Chicago Cubs right-hander Matt Garza after talks broke down during the offseason. This is according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. Detroit though is among six teams including the Cardinals, Red Sox, Jays, Braves and Royals who have initiated talks with Cubs GM Theo...

Cubs logo on Travis Wood’s batting helmet escaping: PHOTO

The Chicago Cubs are on pace to lose at least 105 games, and 110 is on the table. For historical reference, the club record for Ls is 103. Things are getting so bad for the Cubbies that even their logo is trying to flee away from the team. Take a look at Cubs pitcher Travis Wood, and his batting helmet. This occurred in last night’s win over the New York Mets in which Wood out...

Rizzo called up to Chicago

The Iowa Cubs announced that Cubs top prospect, 22-year-old first baseman Anthony Rizzo, will join the big-league club today.

Harry Canary Unmasked

Knowing the end of his reign here is near, I braved the heat and the Zooperstars today and went to Principal Park in search of something to remember Anthony Rizzo by. Normally I perch behind the plate in the shade of the mezzanine. Today I transplanted myself to the rightfield bleachers where I'd be positioned to fetch long balls aimed in that direction. There's a fountain...

Rizzo call-up could give Cubs the spark they need to not make history

The long awaited call-up of Anthony Rizzo to the Chicago Cubs has finally come.  He will be in the starting lineup tonight (6/26/12) against the New York Mets, and is expected to start at first base for the rest of the season.  Rizzo has dominated Triple-A pitching with 23 homers, 62 RBI, .342 AVG, and [...]

Superprospect Anthony Rizzo called up to Cubs; for real this time

Update: the Des Moines Register is reporting that Cubs uber-prospect Anthony Rizzo was taken out of last night’s Iowa Cubs game in the 4th inning, and is being called up to the parent club. So far, there hasn’t been word from the big league team as of yet. So this is call-up for real, and not an error/publicity stunt like last time? What we wrote on Memorial Day weekend: The...

Cubs 6, Mets 1

CHICAGO -- Joe Mather hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, and the Chicago Cubs took advantage of three errors by the New York Mets in the seventh inning to come away with a 6-1 victory at Wrigley Field on Monday. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak by the Cubs and sent the Mets to their third straight loss. Cubs left-hander Travis Wood worked seven shutout innings...

Could Mets Use Bryan LaHair in Left Field?

Despite being left handed, if Chicago is willing to trade Bryan LaHair, should the Mets make a deal? With Kevin Youkilis having been traded from the Red Sox to the White Sox, it may be the start of bigger moves being made across Major League Baseball. The New York Mets need some pop to add to their lineup and though Bryan LaHair is a lefty, with Anthony Rizzo being called up...
