Chris Gruler, the Reds 2002 first round pick, seen
here with the GM who drafted him, Jim Bowden
What if the Reds could go back to 2002 and reconsider using their first round pick on a high school pitcher named Chris Gruler? What if they could select a bona fide superstar instead? Well, thanks to Keith Law of ESPN.com we can at least dream about such a scenario.
Law recently had the brilliant idea to revisit the 2002 'Moneyball" Draft and redraft using the benefit of hindsight. The results of his mock draft are simply fascinating.
The Redlegs boasted the no. 3 overall selection that year, and the following is who Law projects they would draft if they had the chance to do it all over again today:
We can only ponder

The Reds have put left-handed setup man Bill Bray on the 15-day disabled list with a strained groin that has bothered him since spring training.
The move on Tuesday is retroactive to April 19. Bray gave up four hits and three runs during an 11-1 loss to St. Louis on April 18. The Reds already were missing closer Ryan Madson, out for the season with a torn elbow ligament.
All four starting pitchers threw six innings in four wins.

Now this is the Mat Latos we traded for.
If the Reds get this Latos to show up more often than not this season, it’s pretty self-explanatory what’s going to happen. The Reds can be a monster.
I didn’t think the Reds had a chance in Hell last night when I saw Matt Cain was pitching.
While Zach Cozart embarks on his rookie season as a Reds starter, Cincinnati has two other highly rated shortstops in their organization. Didi Gregorius is now hitting .400 at AA Pensacola while Billy Hamilton is considered by many the highest rated prospect still in their developmental system.
Phillies vs. Diamondbacks 4/24/12 QUICK HITS:
Philadelphia defeats Arizona 8-5. Series even at 1-1.
Vance Worley had yet another impressive outing on Tuesday night against the D-Backs. He went 6 innings, allowing only 5 hits and 1 ER while striking out 6.
The Vanimal improves his record to 2-1 with a 2.16 ERA on the year.
Hunter Pence (who appears to be okay) and Lance Nix each...
The Reds will try to shake off the sting of not being able
to close out a series sweep of San Francisco on Thursday. The good news is that
despite Thursday’s loss, the Reds have won back-to-back series for the first
time this year.
Cincinnati continues its home stand by welcoming in Houston
(7-12) in the first meeting of the season between the soon-to-be...
How about that Reds fans? Mat Latos in his 2nd start in GABP shuts down the San Francisco Giants as the Reds rout their NL West foes 9-2 at Bark in the Park Night in Cincinnati!
After getting roughed up in his first two outings, Latos showed Reds fans tonight why the front office traded their best prospects for him. Latos went 7 innings, giving up just 4 hits, 2 walks and 3 strike...
Scott Rolen's homer started a four-run rally in the seventh inning that swept the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-2 victory Wednesday night, extending the San Francisco Giants' misery at Great American Ball Park.
Rolen's first homer since July 6 ended Barry Zito's shutout and got into the Giants' bullpen, which let the game get away on a rain-slicked field.
Scott Rolen joked that his first homer since July 6 was a career saver. It's no exaggeration to call it a game saver.
Rolen led off the seventh inning with a homer that ended Barry Zito's shutout, and the Cincinnati Reds rallied for a 4-2 victory Wednesday night, extending the San Francisco Giants' misery at Great American Ball Park.

PHOENIX (AP) -- Hunter Pence hit a two-run homer, snapping an 0-for-16 slump, and the Philadelphia Phillies went on to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-5 on Tuesday night.
Laynce Nix and Shane Victorino also homered and Vince Worley scattered five hits over six innings for the Phillies, who ended a three-game losing streak.
Worley (2-1) walked one and struck out six for his second...
