Found January 23, 2012 on Rockies Locker:

The Rockies have acquired 36-year old righty swinging 2B/SS Marco Scutaro from the Red Sox for 26-year old righty starter/reliever Clayton Mortensen. Scutaro played in 113 games for the Red Sox last year and he was 118 of 395 (.299 avg, .781 OPS) with 59 runs scored, 7 homers, 54 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. He has now played in 1,103 games in his first 10 years in the majors and he is 1,019 of 3,768 (.270 avg, .727 OPS) with 538 runs scored, 68 homers, 404 RBIs and 44 stolen bases. Scutaro will take over as the Rockies’ starting 2B in 2012. Clayton Mortensen pitched in 16 games (6 starts) for the Rockies last year (his only season with the team) and he was 2-4 with a 3.86 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. Mortensen was little more than an extra piece on the Rockies’ pitching staff, so I really like this deal for them as Scutaro will give the team some zip near the top of the batting order in 2012.

Fantasy Impact: Scutaro Traded to Rockies

The Boston Red Sox traded their opening day shortstop, Marco Scutaro, to the Colorado Rockies for some bullpen help in the form of Clayton Mortensen. Scutaro was never a great fantasy option, but over the last three years he’s been a serviceable fill-in when your team’s starting shortstop is either hurt or has a day off. Scutaro ranked 16th among all shortstops last...

BoSox deal Scutaro to Rocks, eye Oswalt

The Boston Red Sox had a busy Saturday, trading shortstop Marco Scutaro and his $6 million salary to the Colorado Rockies while remaining in pursuit of free-agent starter Roy Oswalt. The Red Sox may be the favorite to sign Oswalt, sources say. The Detroit Tigers were on the fringe of the Oswalt market as of Saturday evening. Other teams were involved, as well. The Red Sox, who...

Marco Scutaro traded to Colorado Rockies

Yesterday, the Boston Red Sox traded Marco Scutaro to the Colorado Rockies for Clayton Mortensen. If you haven’t heard of Mortensen, don’t feel bad. He likely won’t be a part of the Red Sox plans this year anyway. For many in the industry this was a curious move for the Red Sox, but the deal will make a lot more sense when we find out what they are doing to follow...

Scutaro Scoots West

The Red Sox traded Marco Scutaro to the Rockies. He was projected as Boston’s starting shortstop but will play second base and bat second in Colorado, where the Rockies also have added Michael Cuddyer and Ramon Martinez in an offseason makeover following last year’s disappointing slide. Boston gets pitcher Clay Mortensen. Marco posted a .358 OBP in 2011, the second...

Must Be New Math

One thing I find a little puzzling is talk that trading Marco Scutaro opened up room on the Red Sox payroll. Clearly it did, but not that much. Baseball Reference says Scutaro made $5.5 million in 2011 -- nothing to sneeze at, but not a bank-breaker by baseball standards.By comparison, Bobby Jenks, who appeared in 19 games, made $6 million in 2011.People speculating on this windfall...

Your Morning Dump...Where we wonder what the Sox will do with $5.5 million

Every morning we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump... The need for a proven, innings-eating starter is acute, which could mean ongoing talks with free agent pitcher Roy Oswalt could gain traction relatively quickly. The Red Sox have been very interested...

Red Sox Should Use Newfound Financial Flexibility to Pursue Player Like Cody Ross for Needed Outfield Depth

The Red Sox are positioned for another major acquisition. By trading shortstop Marco Scutaro to Colorado, the Red Sox shed $6 million off the books, a move that may make once again make them buyers in the free-agent market. With the financial flexibility, it's plausible that general manager Ben Cherington will increase his pursuit of pitcher Roy Oswalt. The veteran is reportedly...

Red Sox Not Done Upgrading

It looks like Vicente Padilla wasn’t the last starting pitcher that the Boston Red Sox will attempt to bring in. There have been numerous reports tonight that the team will make an aggressive push for Roy Oswalt. A couple days ago this wouldn’t have been possible but the team freed up some money with their trade of Marco Scutaro. @jcrasnick: The Scutaro trade frees...
