Gary Sheffield has been a pleasant surprise for the Mets — certainly not for his slow hitting start, but most definitely for his atypical, upbeat, team-first attitude. And his teammates seem to love him for it.
But I know one guy who probably wouldn’t have been sad if the Mets passed on the former slugger a few months back.
A little under a year ago, Mets 1B/OF prospect Nick Evans made his major league debut, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs in 9-2 Mets’ victory. From that point on, it seemed that Evans’ role with this team was upgraded from half-hearted “if” to an emphatic “when.”
Now, all the team can ask is, “Why?”
