On Wednesday at Tropicana Field, the first 10.000 fans through the gates for the team’s game against the New York Yankees all will be the lucky recipients of a garden gnome figurine in the likeness of Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon. The Joe Maddon Garden Gnome joins the nightmare fuel that was ZimBear (a disturbing half-man, half-teddy bear figurine of team senior adviser Don Zimmer that was given away last season) as one of the more unique giveaways the Rays — or any other MLB team, for that matter — have had in recent memory. Maddon himself took to Twitter on Tuesday to express just how proud and flattered he is to be honored by the team in such a manner. Via @RaysJoeMaddon: I might shed a tear tomorrow. To be the first manager replicated in the world of gnomedom is truly an honor. twitter.com/RaysJoeMaddon/… — Joe Maddon (@RaysJoeMaddon) April 23, 2013 Not only is Maddon “the first manager replicated in the world of gnomedom,” given the crotchety, often humorless nature that characterize the personalities of most MLB skippers, he very well could be the last manager ever replicated in the world of gnomedom. This is why Maddon is one of Major League Baseball’s most interesting, unique and admired managers by those within and outside the world of baseball. The ability to laugh at himself, not to mention being a studious wine aficionado as well as dyeing his hair black to become some kind of goth baseball genius are qualities all baseball fans would like to see in their favorite team’s manager.
