No matter what sport it is, the true winners make their opponents pay for their mistakes : Michael Jordan made Karl Malone pay for late-game free throw misses and turnovers with game-winning jumpshots; Fedor Emelianenko made Hong Man Choi pay for overcomitting with an armbar; the New York Mets made the Boston Red Sox pay for Bill Buckner's gaffe by winning the World Series. The list goes on.
Paul Williams and Winky Wright are boxers who have made careers out of making foes pay when they couldn't capitalize. Williams made Antonio Margarito pay for not pressing the action early and Carlos Quintana for not coming ready to defend his title. Wright has been even more unforgiving, schooling formidable fighters such as Shane Mosley and Felix Trinidad.
The irony of what I think will happen on Saturday night when Wright and Williams square off is that I see Williams extracting tribute from Wright for his long self-induced layoff and love of Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
Winky Wright has had a great career wreaking vengeance on his opponents, but I think he will be unwillingly passing the torch to Paul Williams this weekend, when Williams will get a career-defining win.
