The Flagrant Fan:
The Game Score statistic was developed by Bill James as a way of giving pitchers a score for each game they pitch. A closer look at how the stat is calculated will be discussed later in this post. The statistic is a way to rate starting pitchers. The average starting pitching Game Score is 49 to 51 (depending on the year). This season's league average is 51. R.A. Dickey currently leads the majors with an average Game Score of 66.9. Matt Cain's perfect game rated a 101, one of the highest nine inning scores ever. This is the story of the two highest Game Scores ever recorded. They both happened in the same game. The game occurred on May 1, 1920 between the Brooklyn Robins, who would later become the Dodgers, and the Boston Braves (now in Atlanta) at Braves Field in Boston. Attendance is recorded at just over four thousand souls.. The game was delayed until three o'clock because of rain and would later be called on account of darkness. It ended in a 1-1 tie after twenty-s...
BEST OF MAXIM
The Dodgers continued a trend Wednesday night, one that has seen their offense decline in June.
Los Angeles scored one run on just three hits against Tommy Milone, and the Athletics' rookie left-hander pitched a complete game while earning a 4-1 win. The Dodgers have scored just one run on five hits in two games at Oakland.
Since Matt Kemp was placed on the disabled list May...
Atlanta Braves pitcher Brandon Beachy, who is tied for the Major League lead in ERA, had successful Tommy John surgery on Thursday and is expected to be out of action for about a year. Dr. James Andrews, who performed the operation, had decided on Wednesday that Beachy would not be able to avoid surgery on the partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Beachy...
The Dodgers were swept in the three-game series at Oakland, but the silver lining to their dark cloud Thursday was a magnificent start from Clayton Kershaw.
Kershaw rebounded from allowing five runs in six innings on June 15 against the White Sox by pitching eight strong innings in Oakland. Kershaw allowed one run and three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. But the left...
Martin Prado's versatility got a workout while both third baseman Chipper Jones (sore left knee) and first baseman Freddie Freeman (swollen left index finger) were out with their injuries.
Prado is Jones' primary backup, but he replaced Freeman at first base twice versus the Orioles last weekend and in the first game of the weekday series against the Yankees. To no one&...
This is exactly what Jair Jurrjens needed.
In turn, this is exactly what the Braves wanted to see from Jurrjens.
And it would have been tough to find anyone who could have predicted this kind of a performance from a guy who spent the past eight weeks in minor league exile.
I thought he would get rocked and rolled and be gone by the third inning.
But there was Jurrjens on Friday...
Jair Jurrjens made an impressive return to the majors by limiting the Boston Red Sox to one run and three hits, leading the Atlanta Braves to a 4-1 win on Friday night.
Jurrjens, an All-Star last season when he topped the Braves with 13 wins, worked 7 2-3 innings and left after allowing an RBI double by Daniel Nava that drove in Will Middlebrooks, who led off the eighth with a double...
ANAHEIM, Calif Saturday afternoon's starting pitchers for the Dodgers and Angels couldn't be having seasons that are anymore different.
Not much was expected from lefthander Chris Capuano, a free agent pickup by the Dodgers, whose career has been one of ups and downs, usually interrupted by injuries.
A lot was expected from Angels' righthander Ervin Santana, who is...
Chris Capuano outdueled Ervin Santana with seven gritty innings, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-1 victory over the Angels on Saturday and helping end the NL West leaders' four-game losing streak.
Capuano (9-2) allowed a run and seven hits, struck out four and walked none while lowering his ERA from 2.71 to 2.51. The left-hander worked with runners on base in every inning...
I love it when we win against the Yankees. I love it when we win against the Yankees IN YANKEE STADIUM. This was a good series. :) The choice of verbs in a couple of these news service captions made me laugh. Enjoy...
