Unfortunately, creative athlete nicknames seem to be fewer and farther between these days. My New York teams are woefully thin in this category. Which got me to thinking back on one of the great teams in the nickname category: my beloved ’86 Mets.
Beyond being my last (and only) championship, the Mets team of ’86 was chock full of great nicknames. Give me another team that put this many on the field at one time.
Doctor K (Dwight Gooden): Forget that every Gooden outing was an event those first few years. Doctor K? Awesome. That’s when you know you’re really badass.
