We’ve all heard and participated in the endless discussions about Zack Wheeler. It seems to me that we all focus on the command, which admittedly is an issue, but to me there is a greater issue here. When I watch a baseball game, I don’t watch for a pitcher to tip his pitches. Last night I was watching the MLB Network, and watched as Joey Cora and Mitch Williams broke down video from Wheeler’s first three big league starts. For those that didn’t see it, Cora compared Wheeler’s pitches to the scene in Bull Durham when Crash Davis tells the hitter what pitch is coming. It’s amazing how obvious it was against the White Sox. With a breaking ball he keeps his hands close to his body, and a fastball he has his hands away from his body when he sets up. Then in the 13-2 drubbing, Cora explains how the Nationals knew every pitch that was coming. With the fastball, Wheeler’s glove was placed on his belt buckle, glove closed with his legs straight. When it was a breaking ball, Wheeler’s glove ...

Zack Wheeler: An Organizational Failure

Zack Wheeler: Early Bust or Budding Brilliance?

When he debuted just a few weeks ago, Zack Wheeler was met with tremendous fanfare.  Since then, and a 5.09 ERA with nine earned runs given up later, there have been whispers amongst the fan base, the amateur pontiffs in social media, and overly-opinionated professionals like Craig Carton of WFAN, that Wheeler is a bust.  While it may be debatable whether or not he was called up...

Was Wheeler A Premature Promotion?

WHEELER: On an island (AP) Can we stop pinning the greatness label on Zack Wheeler? If they hadn’t already, the New York Mets surely learned Sunday, Wheeler has a long way to go before he’s the next Matt Harvey, let alone the next Tom Seaver. Nobody knows how Wheeler’s career will unfold, but there’s one camp believing he was rushed by the Mets. The arguments from that corner...

Davey Johnson On Zack Wheeler

Barbara Barker of Newsday caught up with Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson who had some nice things to say about Zack Wheeler, but also pointed out what the young right-hander’s main problem is. “You’ve got to like his arm,” Nationals manager Davey Johnson said. “He has a good fastball and breaking stuff. But it’s command. It’s always going to be command up...

New York Mets prospect Zack Wheeler hit hard in homecoming

Sunday was the day. New York Mets top prospect Zack Wheeler finally made his Citi Field debut, and Sandy Alderson and Co. must have been just as excited as their pitcher. The sun was shining, “Meet the Mets” was blasting over the speakers, and all was right in the baseball world. Zack Wheeler And Why Hype Can Be A B**ch

Andy Martino of the Daily News weighs in on the problem with hype, projection, unrealised expectations, and something about Mike Pelfrey being the devil. It is dehumanizing, what happens to phenoms like Zack Wheeler over the long arc of a professional baseball career. In the minor leagues, you are an abstraction, a blank screen onto which fans and media project hopes that have little...

'Citi Field of Dreams' Calls out Craig Carton over Zack Wheeler 'Rant'

Craig Carton called Zack Wheeler the biggest bust in Mets history the other day. So today? 'Citi Field of Dreams' (and Blitz bud Tanya Mercado) called CC out. As Craig Carlton. Repeatedly.... Full story at Bob's Blitz ~ http://www.bobsblitz.com

Patience Is Bitter…But It’s Fruit Is Sweet

Patience was never really a word you would hear when it comes to New York fan bases. Now, possibly more than ever, Mets fans with the exception of a vocal minority are practicing patience with regard to their expectations for this franchise. I know it’s tough to be a fan especially in New York and think “we’re almost there,” especially after 2006 – but the situation is...

Days Like These

When the day arrives, and it’s clear Zack Wheeler has “figured it out,” this will be the day he will appreciate most. New York Mets fans will prefer to reflect on Wheeler’s first MLB start, six shutout innings vs. Atlanta, but Sunday will be one of those starts that will educate the Mets rookie most as he moves forward. The Mets and Wheeler were roughed up by the Washington...

A Long Day, But Long Overdue

Many times, reality doesn't reach the hype. We've been spoiled by Matt Harvey, who seems to reach the hype every time, and has done so in a relatively short period of time. Zack Wheeler hasn't even reached Harvey's amount of service time, so to think that Wheeler was going to break through and be dominant and reach his hype after three starts is quite ridiculous....
