Okay...so I've taken a little hiatus, (some may call it writer's cramp, I call it summer vacation).  But now I'm back and let's see...what have our beloved Twins done in the past month?  Well, last time I checked in, the Twinkies were in last place with a horrid 30-42 but managed to only be 7.5 GB.  Liriano was still on the team but I was predicting that either he or D. Span would be gone by the trade deadline.  Franchise player Joe Mauer was underachieving at best, Joe Capps just went on the DL and Willingham and Plouffe were tearing the cover off the ball with 15 HR's apiece.  My how things change in one month...or have they? As of today, the Minnesota Twins are  49-62, 11.5 GB, but are no longer in last place as the KC Royals (47-63) have sucked worse.  Liriano was shipped off to the White Sox, Joe Mauer has actually started hitting the ball well (.316), Plouffe has been on the 15 day DL with an injured thumb which sparked the call up and then...

Joe Mauer takes foul ball to the throat

Next time you wake up with a scratchy throat, think of how Joe Mauer felt after taking this foul ball off his Adam’s Apple – or in this case, his Joe’s Apple Tuesday night off the bat of Indians outfielder Shelley Duncan. Mauer stayed in the game.  The Twins came back against Indians’ closer Chris Perez scoring three runs in the top of the ninth to win 7-5.  In related...

'Pitching is the name of the game'

The first season of his return as the general manager of the Minnesota Twins hasn't gone exactly as Terry Ryan had hoped. His team is 49-62 and in fourth place after a loss to Cleveland on Wednesday. Minnesota has plenty of questions to answer this offseason as the Twins look ahead to 2013 in hopes of returning to contention. With the trade deadline behind him and the team'...

Despite loss, Twins had successful trip

Despite a 6-2 loss Wednesday to the Cleveland Indians, the Minnesota Twins wrapped up a successful road trip in which they went 5-2 against Boston and Cleveland. The road trip yielded several positive results for the Twins. Entering Wednesday's game, Minnesota was just one game back of the third-place Indians and had a chance to move into a tie with a win Wednesday. While that...

Revere pushes hitting streak to 21 games

It will take another week or so for Minnesota Twins outfielder Ben Revere to qualify for as one of the major league batting leaders, but when he does, he'll likely start near the top. Revere's .329 average ranks second among all American League hitters behind the .346 of the Los Angeles Angels' Mike Trout, though Revere wasn't averaging the requisite 3.1 plate appearances...

Remember, this is Ron Gardenhire’s fault

With Tsuyoshi Nishioka back with the Twins, and having been a disaster in his series with the Indians, it reminded me of the poor decision making, the cajoling of Ron Gardenhire, and bad strategy that led to this. The halcyon days of 2011. Let’s hit the wayback machine, shall we? Twins target velocity in Year 2 of new ballpark Ah yes, Velocity! I think everyone realizes that the...

Q&A: Ben Revere and Anthony Rizzo, Adjusting to Stardom

Ben Revere and Anthony Rizzo are distinctly different hitters, but they have a few things in common. Most notable is the fact that they are rising stars: Revere with the Minnesota Twins; Rizzo with the Chicago Cubs. Another is that they each credit a minor-league hitting coach for helping them turn the corner. Revere, a 24-year-old outfielder, is following up a so-so rookie campaign...

Twins rally for 7-5 win over Indians

The Minnesota Twins couldn't solve Cleveland Indians starter Corey Kluber. They had no trouble knocking around All-Star closer Chris Perez. Tsuyoshi Nishioka's go-ahead sacrifice fly was part of a three-run ninth inning against Perez, lifting the Twins to a 7-5 victory over Cleveland on Tuesday night. It was the Indians' 11th straight loss, one shy of their franchise...
