The deadline to tender contract offers to players who have had their contracts expire, but are not eligible for free agency, is Monday night. However, if a player is not tendered a contract by Monday’s deadline, he can then become a free agent. Among those that might be non-tendered are C Ronny Paulino, LHP Tom Gorzelanny, RHP Ross Ohlendorf, LHP Joe Saunders, IF Ryan Theriot, and C Jesus Flores. On Tuesday, a team insider told Adam Rubin of ESPN New York the organization has yet to decide if they will non-tender Paulino. Earlier this week, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports said the Mets had been looking for a catcher this winter from outside the organization during the winter meetings. Paulino hit .268 with two home runs and 19 RBI in 228 at bats over 78 games in 2011. He hit .289 in 90 at-bats against left handed pitching. Yesterday, Heyman said the Mets could have interest in Theriot if the Cardinals choose to non-tender him on Monday. In 132 games with the Cardinals this past sea...

Torres needs a RHB caddy...

This is not a bash Andres Torres post, there seem to be plenty of those going around since the trade. Ramon Ramirez makes the trade a win in my opinion but after watching Pagan defensively last season, an upgrade in center field works for me. Sure Pagan is a better career hitter but how much of his offense is off-set by his horrible play in the field last year.So based on the little...

Pirates want Ike Davis, Mets’ price is high

John Perrotto of the Beaver County Times says the Pirates would like to trade for Ike Davis, but the Mets are seeking prospects Starling Marte and Brad Lincoln. Marte, 23, is an outfielder who hit .332 with 24 stolen bases, 12 home runs and 50 RBI in 129 games for Double-A Altoona in 2011. He’s considered a five-tool talent with outstanding speed and is among the Pirates top...

Are Teams Interested In New York Mets’ Mike Pelfrey?

The answer is ‘yes’, apparently there are teams that have approached the New York Mets about the availability of right-hander Mike Pelfrey.  Unfortunately, but unsurprisingly, the players that teams are offering have been underwhelming.  Mike Pelfrey just hasn’t been very good in his career.  A 4.40 ERA/4.24 FIP in 876.2 IP with a 5.06 K/9 just isn’t going...

Mets listening to offers for Niese

Photo by Michael BaronThe Mets are listening to offers for Jon Niese, the 25 y/o left hander is a lifetime 22-23 in 65 starts over four seasons (two partial/ two full seasons). It doesn't hurt to listen but it seems odd that the Mets who don't have major league pitching depth, would actively shop their #3 starter who is a young, inexpensive, lefty and they will control for...

Mets are considering whether to trade Bobby Parnell

According a major league source, ”The Mets were debating Wednesday whether to trade Bobby Parnell to an unspecified team for a starting position player,” ESPN’s Adam Rubin wrote to his blog. Matthew Cerrone: I would trade Parnell. I think he has a world of talent – and maybe it’s because he hasn’t been pitching his entire life, just since college...

Jon Garland Fits The Alderson Mold

It’s no secret the Mets have been penny pinching this offseason. Between the slew of minimal contracts we’ve offered and the lack of any offer to Jose Reyes, it is evident that Sandy Alderson and the front office are examining the bargain bin rather than the premium shelf to construct this team for 2012. Despite this, the team is still in dire need of multiple positions – mainly...

Bobby Valentine Talks Yankees...Sorta

As if the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry needed any life injected into it, former Mets manager Bobby Valentine has wasted no time letting everyone now where he stands. When asked to discuss the rivalry at the winter meetings this week, Valentine replied:“No, I hate the Yankees. I don’t want to waste this valuable time talking about the Yankees. This is too valuable,”While the two...

Rodney Dangerfield Got No Respect? Gil Hodges Overlooked For Hall Of Fame (Again)

What has seemed to be an event every few years, once again Dodger and Mets (Manager) great Gil Hodges is denied election into the National Baseball Hall Of Fame. On Monday (December 5th) the Golden Era Committee announced that Hodges did not receive the required votes. The Committee votes on players no longer on the ballot who played between 1947 and 1972. Cubs 3B Ron Santo did finally gain

Niese starts to interest Yankees

As of Wednesday night, the Mets had not decided whether to trade Jonathon Niese, but according to two people with direct knowledge of the situation, the Yankees were one of four or five teams that had asked about the lefthanded starter.

Cardinals To Non-Tender Theriot - Possible Target For Mets Bench

In the wake of losing Albert Pujols, SI's Jon Heyman reported this evening that the St. Louis Cardinals are expected to non-tender middle infielder, Ryan Theriot. He also stated that the Mets, Braves, Reds and others could be interested in his services.Theriot, who made $3.3 million last season, appeared in 132 games for the Cards in 2011, batting .271 with 26 doubles and 46...

Mets not averse to making more trades

The Mets aren't looking to sell off the roster, but if another team is willing to bowl them over with an offer, they will listen, especially if it means landing top prospects.
