quite surprised. Many were not expecting a small market team player who had never participated in the Home Run Derby before to be chosen. But Cespedes was thrilled and ready for the challenge. Cespedes, who is originally from Cuba and has only lived in the U.S. for about 2 years, became the fourth participate in the history of the Home Run Derby to be part of the home run competition but not part of the actual All-Star game.
Besides Cespedes, Rafael Palmeiro (2004), Hee-Seop Choi (2005) and Ryan Howard (2007) are the three other players to make the Derby but not the actual baseball game. Even though they all tried their best, only Palmeiro made it out of the first round. So, hopes were not high for Cespedes to succeed. But when he stepped up the plate, determination was written all over his face.
Not only did he win the first round, he crush...

Two Chevrolet Silverado’s were placed in center field at Citi Field and while twitter argues over which balls actually hit the truck there was no doubting that Yoenis Cespedes smashed the windshield. While the smash happened in the second round, Cespedes actually hit enough home runs to qualify for the finals in the first round but his second round was enough to earn the American...
The Oakland A's have decided to make a change in light of Yoenis Cespedes winning the Home Run Derby.
It wasn’t the Russians, it was Yoenis Cespedes of the Oakland Athletics. Selected for the All-Star Home Run Derby event only, Cespedes didn’t need to save his energy for tomorrow night’s game. The result was a display of raw hitting talent that made Yoenis Cespedes look a whole lot like Bo Jackson.
Cespedes started his quest for the Derby crown with a tidy seventeen...
Yoenis Cespedes will join Robinson Cano on the American League’s Home Run Derby team, but it sounds like the two won’t be sharing an agent any time soon.
Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan reported that Jay-Z, a hip-hop mogul who recently started his own sports agency, was interested in signing Cespedes and Dodgers rookie phenom Yasiel Puig. Cespedes shot down the idea of joining Jay...
For Oakland A’s fans that have never ventured to a visiting park, tonight is the first opportunity to watch a true marvel — a Yoenis Cespedes batting practice session.
Granted, it’s not the same as those BP sessions at O.co Coliseum, being thrown by Manager Bob Melvin, but it’s the next best thing. Well, technically, given the spotlight which Cespedes routinely shines in...
Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes put on a remarkable show en route to winning the Home Run Derby on Monday night, and now the team will let its fans get a taste of the action. According to Jane Lee of MLB.com, Oakland will open the O.co Coliseum gates an hour early on Fridays so fans can see the slugger take batting practice.
After digging through the team's schedule, here...
Photo courtesy of Major League Baseball Facebook page FLUSHING, N.Y—Many of the game’s biggest boppers took part in tonight’s Home Run Derby but in the end, the underdog took home the crown. Yoenis Cespedes of the Oakland Athletics is your 2013 Chevrolet Home Run Derby champion. Below is the complete breakdown of the home run totals by round. Thanks to ESPN and Cliff Corcoran...
Oakland A’s outfielder Yoenis Cespedes hit nine home runs in the final round to beat Washington’s Bryce Harper to win the 2013 Home Run Derby from Citi Field in New York. Cespedes’ final home run was a 455 foot shot to centerfield in which he capped off with a pretty sweet looking bat flip. [...]
And so, Bryce Harper put on a good show in his first MLB HR Derby...but Yoenis Cespedes was even better in his. Cespedes wins 2013 HR Derby over Harper. Good show.
Still, Cespedes' hair didn't hold a candle to Harper's.

Monday night, Yoenis Cespedes wowed the Citi Field crowd, using 17 first-round homers and nine final-round slams -- including an absolutely devastating parting shot -- to beat out seven other star sluggers in a riveting Home Run Derby.
Hopefully, the NBA was watching, because it probably could have learned something.

Bryce Harper and Yoenis Cespedes showed us that the future of the MLB is incredibly bright when they battled it out in the final round of the Home Run Derby on Monday night. Cespedes may have won the event with a towering home run and an epic bat flip, but the highlight of my night [...]
The Oakland Athletics are hardly accustomed to playing in first place at the All-Star break.
Yet the top spot seems to fit them just fine at the moment - even if it's quite a change for the low-budget club long known for those second-half surges that make for a dramatic September.
The A's are all alone atop the AL West at the break for the first time since 1990. And that...
After checking ESPN.com, it looks as if Yoenis Cespedes of the Oakland A’s hit more long fly balls over the wall than fan-favorite Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals.
The reason I had to check ESPN.com (and don’t ask why I chose ESPN.com, bad habits I guess) was because I had absolutely zero interest in watching the Home Run Derby. Here are five reasons why I did not watch...
Congratulations to Oakland A’s slugger, Yoenis Cespedes, for becoming the new Home Run Derby King. Cespedes beat out Washington Nationals young phenom, Bryce Harper, by hitting 32 bombs out. But the knockout punch came from Yoenis’ Oakland A’s teammate, Bartolo Colon, who overzealous celebrated a little too much. Right before Colon hugged...
He wasn’t officially named baseball’s best slugger, but Bryce Harper made the Washington Nationals proud in his first Home Run Derby appearance, finishing second to Yoenis Cespedes.
Harper hit eight home runs in all three rounds, finishing just one shy of Cespedes' nine in the final round. Cespedes clinched his victory with five outs to spare as his ninth home run sailed...
