Want to know something that is scarier than any horror movie currently in theaters? The 2012 American League East. As of May 27th, all teams had winning percentages of .500 or above, as well as positive, double-digit run differentials. What’s even scarier is that the Baltimore Orioles (the long-time cellar dwellers) are still leading the division. Everybody acknowledged that they had the talent, but nobody expected them to take the next step this soon. Nevertheless, the standings don’t lie. On May 22nd, the Orioles (.628) were up two games on the Rays (.581) and three games on the Jays (.558), with both the Red Sox and Yankees somehow stuck in last place with mediocre .500 winning percentages.   The Yankees have since crept back to a respectable third place, but the Orioles are still on top after nearly 50 games. The natural order of things has been shaken; in a division dominated by Beantown and the Big Apple, Baltimore has suddenly taken the East by storm, and the ramifications ...

Orioles lose to Jays up north; Have the real Birds finally shown up?

For the Orioles, it has been an amazing start to the season. However, have the real Birds – at least, from what we have known the last 14 years – finally shown up? The first six weeks were something to behold, as they looked like contenders and took the baseball world by storm; however, in the last eight days, the Orioles have gone 2-6, and the starting pitching – which...

Royals Take Weekend Series; More Thoughts on the Adam Jones Deal

It was a monumental day for the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, as Adam Jones finally signed his new deal and held a press conference; however, they could not defeat the Royals on Sunday. Kansas City would win by a score of 4-2, and Baltimore could not take the three game series. They are tied with the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the American League East with a record of 29...

Orioles C Wieters ejected for arguing with umpire

Baltimore Orioles catcher Matt Wieters has been ejected from Tuesday night's game against the Toronto Blue Jays for arguing with home plate umpire Doug Eddings. Wieters received his first career ejection for arguing balls and strikes with Eddings during Toronto's three-run fifth inning, removing his mask and yelling at Eddings after Rajai Davis grounded an RBI single to...

Berrys call-up the highlight of Adam Jones week

Adam Jones is ecstatic about one particular baseball transaction during the last week. No, its not his six-year, 85.5 million extension with the Baltimore Orioles. It was the Detroit Tigers decision to call up outfielder Quintin Berry, Jones best friend since they were 5 years old and attending Webster Elementary School in San Diego. The two are so close that Jones is the godfather...

Hunter & Avery Sent to Minors, Chavez off the DL...

It looks like after the loss on Monday night, the Orioles decided to make some moves. As I thought, the Orioles would demote Tommy Hunter today; however, they also sent Xavier Avery back to Triple-A after scuffling pretty badly as of late. Endy Chavez is back from the disabled list. Although Avery did well his first week up in Baltimore and his sample size doesn't indicate...

Another Frustrating Loss for the Birds up in Toronto...

On Tuesday night, the Orioles dropped their fourth game in a row as they lost to the Toronto Blue Jays, 8-6. With the loss, Baltimore has lost three straight series; however, they are still tied for first place in the American League East with the Tampa Bay Rays at 29-21. Once again, the Orioles got a shaky start from a pitcher – this time, Jake Arrieta – and much like Tommy...

Orioles-Blue Jays Preview

The Baltimore Orioles have hit a bit of a rough patch. Facing the struggling Toronto Blue Jays might help them get back on track. The visiting Orioles look to avoid matching a season high with their third straight loss Monday night by handing the Blue Jays a sixth consecutive defeat. Baltimore (29-19) held a two-game lead atop the AL East on May 19 while riding a five-game winning...

Dan Szymborski, Fangraphs.com12:05 Comment From Dauer With Power Still a lot of deep-engine work left to do to turn the O's into a winning franchise, but Dan Duquette's got a winning team now. What do you want to see him do at the deadline?12:06 Dan Szymborski: I expect the O's to be a bit off the pace by that point, hopefully pressure from the brainuntrustworthy upstairs...

Bigger Surprise: Orioles or Dodgers?

As I’m writing this, the Dodgers and Orioles are both in first place, with neither team expected to make a major splash in the off-season (though our very own Thomas Wayne did predict a major improvement for the O’s this season. The Orioles currently sit at 29-19 (though they’re losing to the Blue Jays as I write). The bats have been there, with 5 regulars posting OPS+’s...
