The Phillies have had a nice, season-long run of being the only game in town--aided of course by first-round playoff exits by the Sixers and Flyers--but now the jig is up. The Eagles are back in town, and until October rolls around to really give people a reason to pay attention (assuming, hopefully, that they don't make things too interesting before that), the Phils are likely gonna have to take the back seat amongst the Phaithful to the Green and White.
That said, for those who are less than enamored with the pigskin, there is still baseball to be played--twice as much as normal, in fact. The Phils host the Mets today for a two-fer, with '07 wunderkind Kyle Kendrick facing off with John Maine in game one, and ex-Met Pedro Martinez going against renowned Phillie-killer Tim Redding in game two. Less interesting than who starts the games, of course, will be who finishes them--with Madson blowing yesterday's game in heartbreaking fashion, and Brett Myers looking even shakier in the eighth, your guess is about as good as mine as to who will be closing now. Lidge? Eyre? Jose Mesa? Random fan in section 302, seat 26E?
Only time will tell, and in the meantime, if you feel like turning your TVs off after the bottom of the eighth tomorrow and checking the box score online after, we here at the Level promise not to judge you. The day game starts at 1:05, the night one at 8:05. Fly, Phillies, Fly.
