I became a Red Sox fan in May, 1967. My father took my brother and I to Fenway Park for the first time on May 17th. It was a month before my sixth birthday but the Sox would be on the road on the big day and he wanted to give me an early present – box seats to the Red Sox vs Orioles game. The game has remained vivid in my memory throughout the ensuing forty-four years for a couple of very important reasons: 1) it was my first game, and 2) it was the day I fell in love with baseball. I had already enjoyed my first taste of the game, playing catch and hitting in the yard with my dad… but I had yet to fall in love with the game or the team. Carl Yastrzemski took care of that. On May 17th, he hit a pair of home runs. The Red Sox lost that night (it seems to me they lost each of the first ten or fifteen games I attended in person), but I remember that it didn’t matter to me.
