The Phillies have added an extra position player with the addition of utility infielder/outfielder Pete Orr to the active roster. Orr, taken off the 40-man roster earlier this season after playing 23 games for the Phillies early on. The Phillies created space for Orr by outrighting Hector Luna off of the roster, who opted free agency and signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Orr hit .286 for the Phillies this season.
While the Phillies' 40-man roster sits at 40, the Phillies could create more spots but using the 60 day disabled list for Michael Stutes, Freddy Galvis, Vance Worley, or Carlos Ruiz.
AA Reading did indeed make the playoffs, so don't expect to see Darin Ruf just yet, should the Phillies be planning to add him. They probably will want to protect him from the Rule 5 draft in the offseason so adding him to the 40-man roster is not going to hurt the team. The Eastern League playoffs are two five-game series and would go no later than September 15, giving R...

Protecting Howard, is Ruf the guy?
With the call-up of Darin Ruf what can we expect from him and how many opportunities will he get from Charlie Manuel? I for one am anxious to see if he can bring the same power to the majors that he has exhibited this season in Reading. Breaking Ryan Howards home run record certainly gets you noticed and also noticed by the fans. Ruf’s 38 home...
Chase Utley is a third-base option for the Philadelphia Phillies. Will he again replace Polly Polanco? Remember, the poll for Masked September is here, if you haven’t voted yet.

There are few things more amusing at a Major League Baseball game then a player losing his bat and having it fly into the stands.Last week, Philadelphia Phillies Ty Wigginton didn't hold onto his bat during a game against the Atlanta Braves and some lucky fan got to keep it.Watch as Ty loses his handle on the bat in the fourth inning against Braves pitcher Mike Minor: Your browser...
Tyler Cloyd now occupies the bottom slot of the rotation, making starts like yesterday’s for the Philadelphia Phillies. Are recent additions in the west getting the job done? The Apocalyptic Horsemen Stats are in my recent coverage linked below.

One out away from sweeping the Braves, the Phillies blew it in the 9th last night. One lousy out and closer Jonathan Papelbon could not get it done. Worse, the Phillies allowed a 6 run lead to slip away in a game they should have won. Instead, the 8-7 walk-off loss may haunt the Phillies for some time to come.
There are certain things in life, and in baseball, that should just never...
Juan Pierre is still with the Philadelphia Phillies and I am not surprised. Why would you swap a .300 hitter to save $267K and receive a no-shot prospect?

The veteran pitchers all took Labor Day off yesterday as the youth movement of Tyler Cloyd, Justin De Fratus, and Phillippe Aumont fought off the Reds in a 4-2 win. It was kind of nice seeing some of the hyped up pitchers getting thrown into the pool to sink or swim, especially Aumont who had to dial up a save in his fourth game in the bigs. Very clutch.
Tonight, Kyle Kendrick...
During Sunday's miserable game in Atlanta when things were still going well, Frank grabbed this picture of Cole Hamels on the mound and decided to make it a contest.
The winner will get Frank's two tickets to Monday night's game against Miami.

Erik Kratz hit a three-run home run, Chase Utley added a two-run shot, and Roy Halladay stayed perfect when given a big lead as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-2 on Wednesday.
Halladay, 4-1 in his last six starts, is 110-0 when he is staked to a lead of at least four runs. Halladay (9-7) scattered eight hits over 7 1-3 innings, allowing one run with five strikeouts...

The Phillies showed why other teams do not sleep on them. They played sound baseball in the 4-2 win on Monday afternoon. The story was Tyler Cloyd, but Jimmy Rollins chipped...
Jonathan Papelbon quietly packed his red Phillies travel bag in the visitor’s clubhouse Sunday night at Turner Field.
The closer had just served up a three-run home run to Braves third baseman Chipper Jones in the bottom of the ninth inning in a brutal 8-7 loss. Papelbon is paid big money to close games, so any time he blows one he is upset.
But this one had a different feeling...

Jimmy Rollins hit a three-run homer off Johnny Cueto during a cloudburst that sent fans scurrying for cover on Monday, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
John Mayberry Jr. added a solo homer off Cueto (17-7), who failed in his attempt to become the majors' first 18-game winner. Cueto also lost a day game for the first time this season...
Johnny Cueto's bid to become the majors' first 18-game winner fell short on Monday as the Reds (82-54) were edged out by the Philadelphia Phillies (65-70), 4-2. Jimmy Rollins smacked a 3-run homer in the fifth that proved to be all the visitors needed on a soggy Labor Day in Cincinnati. Despite the loss, Dusty Baker's club still enjoys the largest division...
