The New York Post is reporting that the Mets have signed infielder Jose Valentin to a minor league contract.
If Valentin makes the big league club he will earn $800,000, which is a very affordable price considering the uncertainty surrounding who will
play second base.
Valentin’s best year with the Mets, in which he played in 137 games and hit .271 with 18 home runs.
There is good reason to question how effective Valentin will be this year due to the fact that he has been injury ridden for much of the past two seasons.
Regardless, if Valentin makes the team, the Mets will have themselves a hard working player, who can serve as a positive role models for the younger players, such as Daniel Murphy.
While this is certainly not a huge signing for the Mets, it could prove to be beneficial for the ball club especially if Castillo’s struggles continue into this upcoming season.
