Found August 13, 2013 on The Outside Corner:
Over in the American League, we're hearing the safe refrain we did last year: "Trout or Cabrera?" Miguel Cabrera's actually having a better year than he did last season when he won the AL's Triple Crown, but Mike Trout's also improved on his 2012. But with each team in completely different places in the standings, and Cabrera's overall offensive numbers dwarfing Trout's this year, there's probably not going to be a ton of debate, even if Cabrera doesn't reach the lofty Triple Crown perch again. But in the National League, things are much more murky. Our midseason winner last month was Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, who hasn't played in two weeks thanks to a knee injury. A down month of July prior to the injury also brought the field back to Molina, and in advance of his return to the St Louis lineup, he doesn't appear to be the man on top anymore. Who *is* the leading candidate for the NL MVP award with a month and a half o...

Trout: Ban PED users for life

The PED train continues on, and the opinion of Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim center fielder Mike Trout might be one of the more relevant opinions out there. The 22-year old Trout is one of the best players in baseball, and also a guy who grew up watching players break records on a regular basis during the steroid era. As a current player and someone who was a fan of the game during...

BP Daily Podcast: Effectively Wild Episode 264: Four Questions About Miguel Cabrera/World Series Odds Update by Ben Lindbergh and Sam Miller

Ben, Sam, and guest Zachary Levine mull over four questions about Miguel Cabrera, then talk about the World Series odds of the Tigers and other teams.

Cabrera, Tigers defeat White Sox

CHICAGO (AP) -- Miguel Cabrera hit a towering three-run homer and the Detroit Tigers ended a three-game skid, beating the Chicago White Sox 6-4 Wednesday. A year after winning the Triple Crown, Cabrera has 38 homers and 114 RBIs and is hitting .360. The AL Central-leading Tigers had lost four of five following a 12-game winning streak. Despite surrendering a season-high 11 hits...

Mike Trout Says Ban PED Users for Life

I bet A-Rod is glad Mike Trout isn’t the commissioner of Major League Baseball right now. When asked what should be done about PED users, he had this to say: “To me, personally, I think you should be out of the game if you get caught,” Trout said Monday during an interview with New York radio station WFAN. “It takes away from the guys that are working hard every day and...

Miguel Cabrera’s Most Incredible Strength

Do you want to see footage of Miguel Cabrera hitting a home run? Of course you do. You’re not a monster. Now let me  find the last time he — oh,  right, he hit a homer yesterday. Went yard off John Danks. Sixth time he’s homered in eight games, with two of those coming off […]

Halos will have to pay up to keep Trout

As if the Los Angeles Angels don't have enough problems, wait until after the 2014 season, when outfielder Mike Trout becomes eligible for arbitration for the first time. Trout should easily surpass Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, who set the record for a first-time eligible in 2008, when an arbitrator awarded him $10 million. If you think it's too early...

Tigers waste ninth-inning rally

Mariano Rivera, the greatest closer in baseball history, can't even get Miguel Cabrera out these days. Cabrera became the first player in history to hit two home runs off of the New York Yankees closer in the same series. Cabrera's lead-off homer in the top of the ninth Sunday came on the heels of his two-run, game-tying shot Friday night against Rivera. "His bat...

Mike Trout In Favor of Lifetime Bans for PED Users

If Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout had his way baseball players caught using performance enhancing drugs would be banned for baseball – for life. Trout is just the latest union member to speak out about the need for baseball’s ultimate penalty: one strike and you’re out. “To me personally, I think you should be out of the game if you get caught,” Trout told WFAN’s...

Improved Cabrera having pantheon season

Last Wednesday Miguel Cabrera was facing hard-throwing Cleveland Indians rookie Danny Salazar in the eighth inning with two outs and a runner on. The Indians led the Tigers 3-2 and Salazar had struck out Cabrera three times -- looking on an 88 mph changeup swinging on a 99 mph fastball at the letters and then swinging again on a 100 mph fastball on the outside corner that left Cabrera...

VIDEO: Anibal Sanchez helps Miguel Cabrera relieve some tension…

Get your mind out of the gutters everyone, Sanchez gave Cabby a back rub in the dugout and a much deserved one after the Tigers slugger has been suffering from back issues in recent weeks plus he just tied the game with yet another home run. Either way it’s still pretty damn funny. Also I don’t think I have to mention when you’re Miguel Cabrera it should be an honor for anyone...

Is Miggy Detroit's best?

If there's one debate all sports fans love to engage in, its the "best of" argument. Whether its the best team ever, best athlete ever, best game ever, best play ever, best uniform ever -- best, best, best, best, best -- its a never-ending list, which is also totally subjective. With Miguel Cabreras beyond-description heroics on the baseball diamond, its made me...

Miguel Cabrera first player ever to homer off Mariano Rivera twice in a row

Your browser does not support iframes. For the first time in his career, Mariano Rivera blew three saves in a row. The New York Yankees closer also experienced another first: he allowed consecutive home runs to the same better — Miguel Cabrera. Rivera’s semi-struggles began on Wednesday when he surrendered an RBI single to Adam […]

Nothing But A Number: Major Leaguers Whose Stats Are As Big As Their Ages

Baseball seems to be becoming more of a young man’s game, with more and more prospects being called up everyday, as well as the comeuppance of young stars like Manny Machado, Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, and Yasiel Puig, who should all be in college.  However, there are still some old-timers who are not only sticking around, but putting up big enough numbers to be relevant in baseball...
