“Untouchable” just doesn’t mean what it used to.
It’s a term that’s thrown around MLB offices every December and July, and placed on certain players with little regard as to exactly what it means. As a Mets fan, I’ve spent every offseason listening to how their farm system is producing some of the most special players ever to grace a diamond, but we never actually get to see them because they either get traded or fade away like the flashes in the pan they were always intended to be.
Some of the once-untouchables from recent memory? Philip Humber. Lastings Milledge. Kris Benson. Brien Taylor. Drew Henson — and these are just from New York.
In short, “untouchable” is a bunch of crap.
