The Cincinnati Reds are discussing a contract extension with first baseman Joey Votto, whose deal runs through the 2013 season.
Votto declined to say how close the sides were to an agreement on Monday, referring questions to general manager Walt Jocketty, who wasn't immediately available.
Votto agreed to a three-year, $38 million deal on Jan. 15, 2011 that avoided salary arbitration...

His 10-year contract extension, tacked on to the two years for which he is already signed, puts him in a Reds uniform through 2023.
That's a long, long time, even in dog years, and when the contract expires he will be 40 years old.

The Cincinnati Reds agreed to terms with first baseman Joey Votto to a 10-year, $225 million contract.
Votto becomes the third first baseman this year to sign a $200 million contract, joining Albert Pujols (10 years, $254 million) and Prince Fielder (9 years, $213 million).
