Much has been made of the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays and their offseasons. While the Red Sox have added players with a future this offseason, the Yankees and Rays have added players that would just as soon be eating tapioca and watching Matlock. One of the jokes was that each team is going to be well stocked if 2005 ever comes around again. But would they be? I thought that it would be fun (for me, if nobody else) to see which team actually did get better for 2005.
I have decided the best way to do this would be to use WAR, because I am lazy and I don’t want to analyze a bunch of states. Also, WAR sounds manly, doesn’t it? Without delay, here are the players signed by each team that played in 2005, as well as their WAR from that year
YANKEES
Mark Prior 3.0
Buddy Carlyle -0.2
Neal Cotts 1.3
Andy Sisco 1.0
Rafael Soriano 0.2
Andruw Jones 8.3
Bartolo Colon 4.5
RAYS
Kyle Farnsworth 1.6
Johnny Damon 2.2
Manny Ramirez 3.3
That’s a clear win for the Yankees. ...
