Theo Epstein is none too pleased about the Cardinals receiving an extra pick for the 2015 MLB Amateur Draft in Wednesday's Competitive Balance Lottery.Despite making the postseason 10 times since 2000, the Cardinals were among five other teams that received a bonus pick between the first and second rounds. This has Epstein throwing his proverbial hat and scratching his head as to why.“I could talk all day about the Cardinals and how much we hold them in high regard,” Epstein said. “That’s a fantastic franchise. They have been for the better part of a century. They do extremely well from a baseball standpoint, and from a revenue standpoint. That’s probably the last organization in baseball that needs that kind of (an) annual gift.Because it’s not necessarily the type of thing that they need, given their performance on the field and off the field,” Theo continued. “They do a fantastic job. It just doesn’t seem like something they need at this point.”St. Louis was eligible for the Competitive Balance Lottery on the account of playing in one of the 10 smallest markets (population-wise) in Major League Baseball. However, it's hard to fathom the Cardinals being a small market team considering the overwhelming support they traditionally receive from the surrounding area and states. What makes this development even more interesting is the fact that the Cardinals can actually trade the pick if they desire. And many around the baseball community believe they will try and do just that to acquire Rays southpaw David Price. The rich just keep on getting richer.Via Hardball Talk
