The Flagrant Fan:
The Red Sox should never make trades with the Houston Astros. In what might be the
beantowner's second worst trade since Bagwell, the team from Boston sent Jed Lowrie and
Kyle Weiland for Mark Melancon. And sure, Melancon did have a severe meltdown early for
the Red Sox, but he's pitching really well at Triple A and he can still help the team from
Boston. Even so,the Astros got a steal. Jed Lowrie is currently the third best shortstop in
baseball according to Fangraphs, behind only the miracle rebirth of Furcal and the
consistently good Andrus.
To be fair to the Red Sox, Mike Aviles, the guy the Red Sox chose over Lowrie is currently
ranked the fourth best shortstop, right behind Lowrie. But the only thing keeping them close
is the obscure base running ranking. Aviles is given 1.9 runs for his efforts on the base
paths while Lowrie is given a negative rating there. But at this point, if you take away that
metric, Lowrie is having a far better season than Aviles....

Daniel Bard couldn't get through the 6th inning, but 13 hits from the Red Sox offense allowed the team to squeeze past Baltimore, 6-5.
Bard struggled with command, walking four in addition to giving up five hits over five and a third innings. Bard's strikeout count was down, too, as he had just two, both of which came late in his outing. He got the win, moving to 4-5, but...
Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
"Felix had his good stuff," said Bobby Valentine. "He was battling the whole way. He just happened to pick the night when the opposing pitcher (Brian Matusz) had good stuff and shut us down...
Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington says outfielder Cody Ross has a broken bone in his left foot and could be sidelined 6-8 weeks.
Ross fouled a ball off his foot in Friday night's game against Philadelphia. An MRI on Monday revealed a small fracture.
Cherington says Ross will get a second opinion in Baltimore, but he is almost certainly headed to the disabled list...
In shipping down to Philadelphia, Jonathon Papelbon's notorious entrance to "Shipping Up to Boston" by Boston's own Dropkick Murphys, is no longer played throughout the Fenway Park PA system, leaving "Sweet Caroline" as the lone Fenway sing-a-long. But a few months into the 2012 season, some new Fenway favorites have emerged. Below is a complete list of...
It's decision time for the Red Sox. Kevin Youkilis is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Tuesday, after wrapping up a rehab stint in Pawtucket with a bang. The Red Sox third baseman went 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and an RBI on Monday, while also playing nine innings at third base. After going 4-for-11 with a couple of doubles and a handful of walks in three...
Before the season began, many people thought the Astros in their rebuilding mode were destined to lose over 100 games for the second straight season. The club was without any established hitters in their prime and the new young regulars had not proven anything yet in the major leagues.
The pitching staff was headed by an under achiever with a great arm and a veteran lefty who had...
The Boston Red Sox have placed reliever Rich Hill on the 15-day disabled list with tightness in his left elbow.
Hill had Tommy John surgery on the elbow a year ago and will be examined on Monday.
Boston recalled RHP Mark Melancon from Triple-A Pawtucket to replace Hill in the bullpen and activated him for Sunday's game against the Washington Nationals.
Hill (1-0) has made...
Are the Boston Red Sox finally coming around? It looks like that might be the case. With nine wins in its last 11 games Boston has gone from seven games under .500 to 21-21 in short order. The MLB odds for this historic team are not the best at this point but we agree that the Red Sox are a capable team.
Coming off that disastrous ending to last year and with the...
Adrian Gonzalez may have won a Gold Glove at first base, so playing right field can't be that much harder, right? Gonzo is playing outfield on Tuesday night to let Will Middlebrooks and Kevin Youkilis man the corner infield spots together, but NESN Nation's Dan Duquette isn't all that worried about any potential misadventures in right. See why in the video above. Join...
The Red Sox really don't want to get over .500.
A pitcher's duel went in Baltimore's favor tonight as the Red Sox couldn't touch Brian Matusz, who allowed just two hits and one walk against nine strikeouts in six and a third innings. The bullpen remained strong, splitting the remaining innings among Darren O'Day, Pedro Strop, and closer Jim Johnson.
With the rash of injuries in the Red Sox outfield, the Sox continue to dip into the Pawtucket Red Sox outfield. This time, it is veteran Scott Podsednik.
...the Red Sox need some outfield help.
And according to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, it will be coming in the form of Scott Podsednik.
The 36-year-old outfielder is hitting .323 in nine games with Pawtucket this...
The Phils’ winning streak ends at six wins in a row as they get beaten by the BoSox’s offense for two straight games, losing by the scores of 7-5 and 5-1.
In Saturday’s game, the Red Sox took the lead in the first as Mike Aviles started the game off with a lead-off home run, his seventh home run of the season, giving the Red Sox’s a 1-0 lead. The Red Sox added to their lead...

BALTIMORE -- Daniel Nava, Kelly Shoppach and Scott Podsednik hit late homers that helped the Boston Red Sox defeat the Baltimore Orioles, 6-5, Wednesday afternoon in the finale of their three-game series at Camden Yards. Nava, Shoppach and Podsednik batted seventh, eighth, and ninth, respectively, but took care of most of Boston's offense. They combined to drive in four of...
8 a.m. ET: After winning the first game of the series against the Orioles, the Red Sox dropped the second one and enter Wednesday's rubber match looking to claim the series. The Red Sox will have Daniel Bard, who is 3-5 with a 4.85 ERA, take the hill in this one. Bard didn't get off to a strong start last time out walking three of the first four batters that he faced. In...
