The Red Sox announced today that Koji Uehara will replace Andrew Bailey as the teams closer. This news comes on the heels of another tough 9th inning for Bailey last night against the Detroit Tigers in which Bailey blew his 4th save of the year. Unlike April and May, the month of June has not been kind to Bailey. So far this month he’s given up at least a run in 4 of 8 9th inning appearances, allowing 4 home runs over that span. On the season, Bailey has pitched 22.1 innings, allowing 18 hits and 10 earned runs. Although nothing seems physically wrong with Bailey, moving him at out of the ninth inning seemed like a decision that had to be made. It was a little surprising to see Red Sox manager, John Farrell, go with Uehara over his fellow reliever and countryman, Junichi Tazawa. It seemed like Tazawa was next in line to close when Bailey went on the disabled list earlier in the season. Tazawa also has more durability as well as a higher K/9 this season than Uehara.
