From the Butler BlueSox
Former Slippery Rock University pitcher Justin Thomas will join the BlueSox staff for 2012. Thomas will take on responsibilities as the BlueSox pitching coach and assist manager Anthony Rebyanski with all efforts of the pitching staff.
The Ambridge High School graduate attended Austin Community College in 2005-06 prior to joining the Rock’s pitching staff. While at Slippery Rock, Thomas finished his career with earned run average of 4.50 while appearing out of the bullpen in 44 games. He finished with 72 innings logged and accumulated two saves, gave up 80 hits while striking out 64 batters.
During the summer of 2009, Thomas was a part of the Slippery Rock Sliders of the Prospect League. While pitching out of the bullpen with the Sliders, he was 0-3 with 14 strikeouts over 17 innings pitched.
“Justin brings experience as a player in this league to Butler and our team for 2012,” said Rebyanski.
“Thomas was a sidearm style pitcher in college and was successful,” said Rebyanski. “In my opinion, guys like that who are successful know ‘how to pitch.’ They get the groundballs, double plays and outs that are needed in key situations; therefore know how to pitch to hitters and know how to get those results.”
Thomas has been a volunteer coach in the Ambridge Area during the summers from 2006-10. In 2008 and 2010 he helped coach the Ambridge 15 and 16 year old teams.
In spring 2011, he was named assistant coach at his alma mater Ambridge High School. After the conclusion of the 2011 spring high school season, Thomas went south to be an assistant with the Tradewater Pirates in the Ohio Valley Collegiate Summer League.
