The Detroit Tigers will head into the 2018 season with low expectations, and they could use some things for Christmas. Check out three things the Tigers would like for Christmas.

To get rid of bad contracts

The Tigers have done a decent job at getting rid of some bad contracts. Letting Anibal Sanchez go was a great move, but the club still has a really bad contract with Victor Martinez. In 2018, Martinez will be 39 years old and will receive $18 million from the Tigers. That is an awful contract for a player that just doesn’t play that often. He missed a ton of games last season due to injury and his bat just isn’t what it used to be. Some fans have called for the Tigers to release the veteran, and that might not be a bad idea. It remains to be seen what the Tigers will do, but as of right now, he is still a Tiger.

Health

It seems like we come back to this topic every year with the Tigers, and it never changes. The team just can’t stay healthy. Martinez, Michael Fulmer and a few other key players missed time last season and really hurt the Tigers’ season. All teams deal with injuries, but it does seem like the Tigers deal with more injuries than most teams. Expectations won’t be high this year, but if the club can stay healthy, a lot of prospects will get valuable experience and develop throughout the season.

Prospects

Some of the biggest talk around the baseball world has been about the Tigers potentially trading Michael Fulmer, which would be a huge deal for the club to make. Fulmer is coming off of an injury, but he looks like a star and his contract is a dream for any team. Personally, I think the Tigers should trade Fulmer, considering the amount of prospects they could get in return for him. The Yankees have been a team of interest and that should interest the Tigers a lot. They are a huge organization with a ton of young talent. The Tigers should seriously consider trading Fulmer for a ton of young prospects that they can develop.
