Austin Jackson had four hits and Rick Porcello pitched eight strong innings to lead the Detroit Tigers past the Kansas City Royals 9-3 on Tuesday night. The Tigers scored five runs in the first and won for only the third time in 11 games. Porcello (2-2) took advantage of the offensive support to snap out of his slump, allowing three runs and seven hits. In his previous two starts, the right-hander was 0-2 with a 15.26 ERA. Luke Hochevar (2-2) took the loss for Kansas City, yielding nine runs on 12 hits and three walks in four innings. Hochevar had given up only three runs over 11 1-3 innings in his last two starts. The teams were rained out Monday night, Kansas City's second rainout in three days. The Royals have lost two straight following a three-game winning streak that came on the heels of a 12-game skid. After the Royals went down in order in the first, the Tigers put their first seven batters on base and needed just 17 pitches to do it. After two singles and Miguel Cabrera's double made it 1-0, Eric Hosmer's wild throw from first base to the plate allowed two more runs to score. The next three Tigers singled, increasing the margin to 5-0, before Ramon Santiago grounded into a double play and Don Kelly popped out to end the inning. Detroit added three more runs in the third on an RBI single by Kelly and Jackson's two-run double before Jhonny Peralta made it 9-0 with a run-scoring single in the fourth. Kansas City got on the board with an RBI groundout by Humberto Quintero in the fifth, and Alex Gordon made it 9-2 with a double in the sixth. Jarrod Dyson led off the eighth with a stand-up triple and scored on Gordon's groundout. The game took a strange twist in the ninth, when Jeff Francoeur hit a long fly that bounced off the top of the fence in left-center. Jackson reached over the wall and caught the ball before it landed in the Kansas City bullpen, saving a home run. Second base umpire Tim McClelland - appearing in his 4,000th game - mistakenly called Francoeur out, but after a conference among the umpires, Francoeur was credited with a double. NOTES: Porcello struck out three and walked none. ... Andy Dirks, filling in for suspended Tigers DH Delmon Young, left in the fourth inning after aggravating his strained left hamstring. Brad Eldred replaced him, marking his first career pinch-running appearance. ... Tigers manager Jim Leyland said he does not plan to start Young when he returns Friday from a seven-day suspension, wanting to give him a day to ''run around and get loose.'' ... Hosmer went 0 for 4, extending his hitless streak to 19 at-bats.

Detroit Tigers: in Valverde we trust?

Should the Detroit Tigers consider swapping out the closer duties and hand the 9th inning keys to Joaquin Benoit? We’ve all that about it, but would it be the right move? Jose Valverde went 49 for 49 in save opportunities last year, albeit in consistently dramatic fashion. But 49 for 49 is flat out epic and must be respected. Regardless, should Benoit get a crack at the job? Let’s...

Despite the lack of firepower across the board, there are some intriguing names that bear watching. This list will illuminate 7 names that you probably already know as well 7 names that have been flying under...

Detroit Tigers Learning Greatness Doesn’t Come Easy

The Detroit Tigers were supposed to take baseball by storm this season. The addition of Prince Fielder meant World Series or bust. Playing in what many deemed the worst division in baseball could only mean domination. Some fans even predicted a similar start to the 1984 Detroit Tigers’ 35-5 record. One month in, and that didn’t quite happen. A lot occurred to derail Detroit’s...

Selig sends message with Young ban

A seven-game suspension for Detroit Tigers outfielder Delmon Young may not be sufficient. But it's encouraging that Major League Baseball went at least that far. The commissioner's office sent an important message Monday by docking Young's pay for one week. The message was this: MLB players represent their organizations for 24 hours each day, not three, and they must...

The Royals are playing better, but they still need to improve

Despite a 7-16 record and a recent 12 game losing streak, the Kansas City Royals went 4-3 on their last road trip and are only five games out of first place in the American League Central. And in six of their 16 losses, they only lost by one run. If the Royals went 6-6 instead of 0-12 during their losing streak, they would be 13-10 and leading the A.L. Central. Fans would be talking...

Game 2012.23: Royals at Tigers

11-11, tied for 2nd with Chicago, 1 game behind Cleveland. One of the things going right for the Tigers so far this season had been the starting pitching, which has kept the team in games even as it has been unable to produce runs. Over the last 10 games, that has all changed, with the starters going 2-6 with a 6.65 ERA.  Bad Max Scherzer was the latest victim, giving up 3 runs...

Latest rainout causes another rotation shuffle for Royals

The rainout Saturday at Minnesota was welcome, giving the Kansas City Royals pitching staff and especially the bullpen a needed rest. The rainout Monday night at Detroit for what was to be the opener of a three-game series was not as desirable, but it allowed manager Ned Yost to maneuver his rotation again. The revised rotation does not include Luis Mendoza, who will likely be...

Tim...

Yankees-Royals Preview

(AP) -- The Kansas City Royals are off to a horrific start at Kauffman Stadium, and it doesn't appear like things will get any easier with visits from a couple of traditional powers. Royals-Tigers Preview

(AP) -- The Detroit Tigers return home slumping, losers of eight of 10 and uncertain when Delmon Young can rejoin the club. A visit from the Kansas City Royals could provide some relief.
