DETROIT The Detroit Tigers have added a bullpen arm ahead of Wednesday's trade deadline.
The Tigers announced Monday that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Jose Veras from the Houston Astros in exchange for outfielder Danry Vasquez and a player to be named later.
"We are pleased to add an experienced arm to our bullpen," said David Dombrowski, Tigers president, CEO, and general manager "Jose can pitch in a variety of roles, provides depth in the bullpen, and complements the roles of Joaquin Benoit and Drew Smyly."
Veras is 0-4 with a 2.93 ERA and 44 strikeouts and 14 walks in 42 relief outings with the Astros this season. Opponents are hitting .192 against him. He didn't give up an earned run and struck out six over his seven outings during the month of July.
Vasquez, one of the Tigers' top prospect, hit .281 with 16 doubles, five triples, five home runs and 39 RBI in 96 games with Single-A West Michigan.
