The Detroit Tigers seem to be joining the growing number of major league teams with two hitting coaches.

Detroit has brought up minor league hitting coordinator Toby Harrah to assist Lloyd McClendon in working with the hitters. The team says he'll remain with the major league club for the remainder of the season.

The hitters who have occupied the Nos. 5-9 spots in the batting order have struggled for much of the season to collectively negate the aggregate .300-plus batting average posted by the first four hitters.

Harrah has been with the Tigers as an organizational hitting coach for nine years and thus worked with many of the club's current players on their way to Detroit.

The move isn't seen as an insidious attack on McClendon's performance but rather an acknowledgement by the organization of the growing workload and evolving duties involved in being a hitting coach today.

Harrah has worked with McClendon during spring training, and they've had no problems.

"He's just going to tag along up here for a while," manager Jim Leyland said, "just take a look at some guys. We've had so many guys struggling, it's nice to have another helping hand."

Nearly every park now has one, usually two, hitting cages beneath the stands, behind the dugouts, and it's tough for a hitting coach to monitor two cages at the same time.

There are also hitting stations (soft toss, tees and the like) plus watching videotape with individual hitters who are having problems. Not to mention pregame batting practice that may be taking place at the same time.

"A lot of teams have gone to that now," Leyland said Wednesday before the Tigers' 13-9 loss to the Texas Rangers. "This is really nothing new. I don't know how long Toby's gonna be there. I think he'll probably come and go a little bit.

"I know Tony La Russa did this with the Cardinals. When you get more than one or two guys struggling, it's a pretty big job for one guy."

Harrah can be in uniform and on the field before games, but only McClendon can be in the dugout when the game begins. Harrah will retreat to the clubhouse and watches the game on television, taking notes to be shared with his boss later.
