The Detroit Tigers have reinstated outfielder Ryan Raburn from the disabled list and purchased the contract of utilityman Don Kelly from Triple-A Toledo. Detroit announced the moves before Saturday night's game against the Chicago White Sox. Raburn had been out since Aug. 1 with a sprained right thumb. Kelly was designated for assignment Aug. 3 but now returns to the Tigers. Reliever Al Alburquerque also will be back soon. The team says it will recall him from Toledo before Sunday night's game against Chicago. The right-hander hasn't pitched in the majors since undergoing offseason surgery on his throwing elbow. Detroit also recalled right-hander Luis Marte, catcher Bryan Holaday and infielder Danny Worth from Toledo on Saturday.

Cabrera can't run, but he can swing

Miguel Cabrera looked like an arthritic retiree, dragging his right leg through the infield dirt around third base. He limped. He paused. He hunched over and rested his hands on his knees, the fingers of his mitt splayed open to support his 240-pound frame. It was the top of the sixth inning Friday night, and Cabrera delivered a pep talk to one of the most important contributors...

Tigers' Cabrera plays through pain

DETROIT -- Miguel Cabrera at 80 percent -- or whatever he is -- is better than most players at 100 percent. He knows it, manager Jim Leyland knows it and his teammates certainly know it. Without Cabrera, they have no chance of passing the Chicago White Sox and winning the Central Division. Cabrera's right ankle is bothering him, probably enough that if it were earlier in...

Garcia impresses in Tigers debut

DETROIT -- All in all, Avisail Garcia's first game in the major leagues was as good as he could have imagined. In his first at-bat, against Chicago White Sox starter Francisco Liriano Saturday night, Garcia fought off pitch after pitch before earning a 10-pitch walk. "I saw the ball good," Garcia said. "He's a good pitcher, but I saw the ball good every pitch...

Will Tigers turn sweep into momentum?

DETROIT Justin Verlander and the Tigers swept the Chicago White Sox out of Comerica Park with an emphatic 4-2 victory Sunday night on national TV, giving them a tie for the Central Division lead. But how much does it really mean at this point? "We feel like we made this statement last time, and obviously we didnt continue to play great," Verlander said. "I think...

Scherzer continues dominance, Tigers defeat White Sox

Coming into tonight’s game, Detroit Tiger’s Max Scherzer’s month of August was a thing of beauty. He had won 4 of 5 starts, accumalating 44 strikeouts, and a 2.25 ERA over 32 innings of work. Every month since the inception of the regular season, Scherzer has seen his earned run average fall… and fall… and fall. Meanwhile, he has seen his strikeout totals rise and rise...

Game 2012.131: White Sox at Tigers

69-62, 2nd place, 3 games behind CWS, 3 games behind WC. Well, after getting swept by KC while the White Sox lost 3 out of 4 to the Orioles certainly has dampened everyone’s spirits, there is still a lot of baseball left, and the Tigers could very well find themselves tied for first place on Sunday night. Isn’t this why we love baseball? So rather than focus on the negatives...

Verlander outduels Sale, Tigers complete sweep of White Sox

The Detroit Tigers (72-61) completed the sweep of the Chicago White Sox (72-61), 4-1. Detroit’s Justin Verlander (8 IP, 11 SO, 1ER) pitched eight innings of 1-run ball, proving why he is the reigning American League MVP and Cy Young award winner and why his name should be in the discussions again. The Tigers have now moved into a tie with the White Sox for the lead in the Central...

The Tigers designated the 31-year-old Baker for assignment earlier in the day. Baker is hitting .254 with four home runs this year. He was traded to Detroit by the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 5. Baker was just 7-for-35 for the Tigers. Baker...

Indians-Tigers Preview

A huge sweep over the team they were chasing in the AL Central has pulled the Detroit Tigers into a tie for first place. Staying atop the division for another few days, at the very least, certainly seems likely. Following an emotional weekend, the Tigers look to avoid a letdown at Comerica Park in Monday's opener with the sputtering Indians, losers of 18 of 19 away from Cleveland...
