The Detroit Tigers are ready to move on without backup catcher Brayan Pena.
A team spokesman says Pena's agent reached out to the Tigers, and the team said at this point it is looking in a different direction.
Pena signed a one-year deal with Detroit before the 2013 season. He hit .297 with four home runs in 71 games as the primary backup to Alex Avila. The 31-year-old Pena has also played for the Kansas City Royals and Atlanta Braves.
The Tigers also have 25-year-old Bryan Holaday in their system. He started eight games behind the plate this year for Detroit.

Another playoff season for the Detroit Tigers is in the books. And another season tacked on to a nearly 30-year World Series title drought has also been etched in stone. Few teams boast the belly-of-their-prime offensive and pitching firepower that the Tigers do. But as of yet, it hasn’t materialized in the form of a championship. So now, not only does GM Dave Dombrowski have to...
The Tigers have decided not to re-sign free-agent catcher Brayan Pena, who shared the news via Twitter on Wednesday.
"I was inform that i will not be returning to The Tigers ,i want to thanks the FANS, the ORGANIZATION & my TEAMMATES for the opportunity !!!!" said on Brayan Pena@cuban2727. "Now I'm ready to accept the new chapter in my life like i always do...
Backup catcher Brayan Pena will test free agency, with the Detroit Tigers apparently ready to hand his job over to Bryan Holaday for the 2014 season. Pena tweeted Wednesday that his brief time in the Motor City had come to an end:
I was inform that i will not be returning to The Tigers ,i want to thanks the FANS, the ORGANIZATION & my TEAMMATES for the opportunity !!!!
Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander rewarded himself on a fairly decent 2013 season (although subpar for him) with a new vehicle. Justin’s brother, Ben, tweeted a picture of the owner and his car early Wednesday. “Only other one like it on the East Coast is some guy named Michael Jordan. So sick,” Ben Verlander tweeted. It’s a 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series and runs...
It's not a World Series parade, but former Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland will take it.
Leyland, who surprised the baseball world last week by resigning from his managerial gig, told a local TV station that he'll be the grand marshal of the Americas Thanksgiving Parade in Detroit.
"It'll be a nice way to say goodbye to fans," Leyland told WDIV.
Miguel Cabrera underwent muscle repair surgery Tuesday and the Detroit slugger is expected to be ready for spring training.
The Tigers revealed after the season that Cabrera had been limited down the stretch by a tear in his groin. He still hit .348 with 44 home runs and 137 RBIs during the season. Cabrera batted .262 with two home runs in 11 postseason games before Detroit lost...
Miguel Cabrera is on the mend for 2014.
According to a Detroit Tigers official release, their third baseman underwent "successful core muscle repair surgery" in Philadelphia Tuesday morning.
Cabrera will do physical rehabilitation for the next 6-8 weeks and is expected to be ready for spring training.
Despite a series of injuries, Cabrera, 30, batted .348 with 44 home...
According to a photo sent out by Justin’s brother Ben, Verlander bought a 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series car on Wednesday morning. The car runs between $250,000-$300,000 and clearly comes with gullwing doors. I guess one way to make yourself feel better about losing in the ALCS is to buy a new car, and according to Ben Verlander, the only person with a car like this...
It isn’t the parade down Woodward Avenue that former Tigers manager Jim Leyland was hoping for, but it will still be a special moment. On Tuesday, the team announced that Leyland will grand marshal America’s Thanksgiving Parade in Detroit. In a released statement, Leyland expressed his gratitude for the opportunity:
“It is an honor to be a part of America’s Thanksgiving...

Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera had successful surgery on Tuesday, repairing a damaged core muscle. Looking back on the way the Tigers went down to end the season, one has to ask the question, “Should the Tigers have sat Cabrera after he aggravated his injury in late August?” There is a lot to take in from both sides of this argument. However one thing in this situation...
Philadelphia-based Dr. William Myers is set to perform surgery on the biggest star in the MLB.
Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers is the patient, as he and the organization are looking to get the 3rd baseman treatment for a bad groin strain.
Cabrera will likely be the AL MVP for the 2nd consecutive year. The 30-year old hit .348 with an OPS of 1.078 in the 2013 regular season,...
