On Aug. 8, 2011, a day the Tigers did not play and the logical time to make the announcement, they revealed the re-signing of president/CEO/GM Dave Dombrowski to a new four-year deal and Jim Leyland to a one-year extension of his expiring contract. Thursday, another day the Tigers did not play, came and went with Leyland still working on that same deal and no word about next season. It could mean something or it could be meaningless, but it has the potential to become a distraction for a team that needs to focus all its energies on catching the Chicago White Sox in the American League Central. Leyland noted a year ago that "at the end of next year if they don't want me, that's fine. It's real clear-cut. If I decide I don't want to do it anymore, you never know." The veteran manager has given no indication his interest is flagging and retirement is in his future. In fact, several times -- even as his team has struggled -- he has said he's as ener...

Mike Trout's Potential MVP Win Shouldn't Detract Attention From Miguel Cabrera's Ongoing Greatness

Tigers manager Jim Leyland insisted last week that Miguel Cabrera's MVP candidacy will be hurt by a certain "Wonderboy." He's right, but that shouldn't stop us from recognizing the greatness that Cabrera continues to show. Granted, Cabrera has never been and never will be an elite defender, especially since he willingly made a leap across the diamond to play...

Fister's laid-back style a pregame routine

Detroit Tigers starter Doug Fister takes being a laid-back Californian to a whole new level. In fact, unlike many pitchers who pump themselves up before a start by listening to loud music on their headphones, Fister is more likely to be found stretching out his 6-foot-8 frame on his clubhouse chair or the couch for a little snooze. "The story I like to tell is one of his first...

Game 2012.119: Orioles at Tigers

63-55, 2nd place, 2.5 games (that’s what you get for taking a day off) behind CWS, 1 game behind WC There’s been a lot of talk as of late regarding Miguel Cabrera’s MVP candidacy. In fact, it seems as if the local papers have received an edict to write about it daily. And they make strong arguments in his favor. But MLive’s Josh Slagter made a fantastic point in an article...

Tigers aim for Victor Martinez to return next year

The Detroit Tigers have given up hopes of Victor Martinez coming back this season. Tigers trainer Kevin Rand said Friday the decision was made earlier in the week to stop Martinez's running program. Rand says the team is now aiming for the 33-year-old Martinez to return for the start of spring training next year. The designated hitter is recovering from microfracture surgery...

Tigers 1B-C Martinez won't make late-season return

Detroit Tigers first baseman-catcher Victor Martinez was officially deemed out for the year after it was decided that his surgically-repaired left knee needs more time to get stronger, MLB.com reported Friday. Martinez had the microfracture surgery in January and has missed the entire year. The team had hoped for a late-season return. Kevin Rand, the team's head trainer, said...

Tigers' Scherzer showing signs of development

Detroit Tigers right-hander Max Scherzer has had these streaks before. It's just that this one looks as if it could be a little more permanent. Scherzer struck out 10 Wednesday to improve to 6-1 in nine starts beginning June 28. He has tied Justin Verlander for the team lead in wins with 12. In the past, Scherzer has struggled to limit the damage in one inning. The game frequently...

De Vries looks to bounce back against Tigers

After facing a pair of division leaders, the contending Detroit Tigers hoped to have an easier time facing the Minnesota Twins. That wasn't the case in the series opener, but the Tigers have a chance to conclude their stay at Target Field on a positive note Wednesday with help from Max Scherzer. After dropping its final two games against the New York Yankees last week, Detroit...

Scherzer dominant in 5-1 victory over Twins

It may be safe to say at this point that the Tigers have three quality starters for the final stretch run of the regular season. Max Scherzer was dominant yet again Wednesday afternoon improving to 6-1 with a 3.36 ERA in his last nine starts and reached double-digit strikeouts for the fourth time this year. In addition to this, Scherzer threw a total of 117 pitches matching his third...

Prince Power: Fielder’s two bombs sends Tigers to 5-3 win over Orioles

Verlander can’t be Verlander every night… But when he isn’t it would be nice if his offense can pick him up. Well that’s exactly what happened Friday night as Detroit’s big guns in Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder combined for three home runs and five RBIs in a 5-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles. In what would be decent outing for just about any other pitcher in the League...

Fielder's two homers lift Tigers over Orioles

By MICHAEL J. HAPPYFOXSportsDetroit.com DETROIT -- As soon as he hit it, you knew it was gone. The sound of bat-meets-ball resonating throughout Comerica Park said so. So did where the ball eventually landed, in the seats down the right-field line, directly behind a Bell Tire advertisement plastered on a facade 400-plus feet away from home plate. Prince Fielder's eighth...
