According to CBS Sports’ Danny Knobler, the Tigers are looking for a middle of the order hitter after receiving ‘discouraging’ news regarding designated hitter Victor Martinez. Recent reports on Martinez indicate that he’s still unable to run or put weight on his knee after suffering a torn ACL during the offseason. Because of this his return this season is believed to be 50/50 after news surfaced just a couple of months ago that Martinez could be back by late August or early September.
In addition to V-Mart’s uncertain status this season, the Tigers were also hoping to get more offensive production out of Delmon Young which just hasn’t happened.
If the Tigers are going to make a move they’re going to be very selective considering Martinez is expected to be back with the team as the DH next season. Because of this it won’t be likely that Detroit acquires a bat that’s signed beyond this season like an Alfonso Soriano who Knobler suggests.
