Jose Valverde 2011 Stats ERA SAVES K’s 2.24 49 69 According to an article in the Detroit Free Press the Detroit Tigers have picked up the 2012 option on closer Jose Valverde. The Tigers will be paying Valverde $9M in the upcoming season, which brings their total 2012 Salary up to $82M ish already! I don’t think anyone can argue with Valverde’s 2011 performance and if he deserves to have his $9M option picked up. Valverde went a perfect 49 for 49 this year in 75 appearances with a 2.24 ERA with 69 K’s, which is one of the better performances in recent history. You could even say that on the open market Valverde would get much more then the $9M the Tigers are giving him in 2012, which may even look like a steal for some Tigers fans. The question I would like to raise is not is Valverde worth it but rather…can we afford it?
