Found March 31, 2009 on Eli's MLB Rumors:
In a surprising move, the Tigers released designated hitter Gary Sheffield. Sheffield, who has 499 career homeruns, was hitting just .178 with 5 HR in 45 at-bats this spring. Injuries have really handicapped Sheffield's playing time in recent years, and the Tigers are looking for a more reliable presence in the lineup. Sheffield is a career .292 hitter and is looking to become the 25th player to ever hit 500 or more homeruns.

As for teams that could pick him, it is hard to say. He isn't agile enough to play in the field regularly, limiting his options. If Sheffield wants to play in 2009, he will need to accept a low base salary, maybe even a minor league deal.
