Of all the many crazy maladies, bizarre injuries and comic misfortunes that have sidelined baseball players, it’s safe to assume that before this week, never has a bowl of soup effectively sidelined a major league ballplayer. But that all changed thanks to Detroit Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta (not to be confused with Rays pitcher Joel Peralta, who had an unfortunate experience of his own this spring training), who was forced to sit out of Monday’s exhibition game against the New York Mets after he became violently ill after accidentally eating some clam chowder soup in the clubhouse. Peralta believed he was eating potato soup in the clubhouse before the Tigers took the field against the Mets at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Fla. Unfortunately — and subsequently, nauseatingly — for him, he did not check closely enough, because what Peralta believed to be a hearty potato soup turned out to be clam chowder, and Peralta just so happens to be allergic to several kinds of seafood...

Cabrera homers in return from WBC

Miguel Cabrera homered on the first pitch he saw since returning from the World Baseball Classic and the Detroit Tigers beat Florida Southern 11-0 on Wednesday. Cabrera, who batted .333 with a homer for Venezuela in the WBC, arrived in camp on Tuesday and connected in his only at-bat against the Division II school. Anibal Sanchez struck out six in four hitless innings for the Tigers...

Jhonny Peralta scratched from Tigers lineup after allergic reaction to soup

Spring training can be a humorous time when it comes to bizarre injuries across baseball, but there is nothing funny about an allergic reaction. In terms of timing, I’m sure the Detroit Tigers are relieved that Jhonny Peralta realized he is allergic to clam chowder on March 11 rather than in October. According to MLB.com’s Jason Beck, Peralta had to be scratched from the Tigers’...

Brennan Boesch on Yanks radar

The list of outfielders competing for the vacant position left by the injured Curtis Granderson could grow, as Jon Heyman of CBSsports reports that the Yankees will consider looking at freshly released Brennan Boesch. Earlier this  morning the Tigers released Boesch, allowing him to a become a free agent should he clear waivers. If Boesch does clear waivers, the Tigers would owe...

Tigers realease Boesch

Brennan Boesch's days with the Detroit Tigers are over. The Tigers released the 27-year-old outfielder Wednesday morning. Boesch suffered an oblique injury during batting practice early in spring training, which limited his playing time. He had been competing with Andy Dirks, Quintin Berry, Avisail Garcia, Jeff Kobernus and Nick Castellanos for a job in left field. "There...

Car trouble causes Prince Fielder to miss spring training game

It isn't uncommon for players to drive themselves to and from road games during spring training. Most of the stadiums are within a reasonable driving distance from one another. So, it was only a matter of time this spring that someone failed to arrive at the park because of car trouble. That someone was Detroit Tigers slugger Prince Fielder.Fielder was supposed to make the trip...

Tigers Cut Ties With OF Boesch

LAKELAND, Florida – The Detroit Tigers have officially cut ties with estranged outfielder Brennan Boesch. With the signing of OF Torii Hunter in the off-season, there were no remaining open spots in the Tiger outfield. Andy Dirks and Quintin Berry are in line to compete for the left field spot. Dave Dombrowski has been trying [...]

Tigers rough up Halladay, Phillies

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) -- Ramon Santiago hit a grand slam and Don Kelly also homered off Roy Halladay, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 10-6 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. Detroit starter Drew Smyly allowed three runs -- two earned -- and five hits in 3 1-3 innings, and Brayan Pena also went deep. Chase Utley hit his first homer of the spring for the Phillies. The...

Brennan Boesch released

The Detroit Tigers have said farewell to Brennan Boesch. He showed potential for the big leagues when he was called up three years ago, but since then hasn't delivered that potential. Cutting Brennan Boesch makes perfect sense with Andy Dirks leading the left field starting job with Austin Jackson in center and Torii Hunter in right field. Far as the back-up role the Tigers have...

An Examination of Rick Porcello’s Strikeouts

Begin with the principle that spring-training stats are meaningless. Use that as your rule of thumb and far more often than not, you’ll end up in the right. Player X mashes a dozen dingers before the end of camp. It’s probably meaningless. Pitcher Y finishes with an unheard-of strikeout-to-walk ratio. It’s probably meaningless. Team Z ends up with a really good or really bad...

Brennan Boesch Is Certainly Worth A Look For The Mets

We’re heading into the time in spring training when players get released, and the Mets should be all over this: Brennan Boesch was released this morning by the Tigers. He’s an outfielder. He has some power. And, he’s still breathing. What’s not to like? And, he’s coming off a strained oblique muscle, so he should fit right in with the Mets. Boesch is a lifetime .259...

Tigers take advantage of Gee's control problems

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -- Dillon Gee struggled with his command, giving up six runs in the New York Mets' 9-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Thursday. Gee allowed three hits, four walks and hit two batters in two innings. He also threw three wild pitches. Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run single in his first spring training game back since leaving to play for Venezuela in the...

Gee Rocked In A Wild 9-1 Loss To Tigers

The Detroit Tigers defeated the New York Mets this afternoon by the score of 9-1 at Tradition Field. Most of the damage came against starting pitcher Dillon Gee who was absolutely awful and completely out of sync. Gee had no control as evidenced by his four walks, two hit batters and three wild pitches in just two innings of work. He was charged with six earned runs and didn’t...
