Chris Tillman has become the pitcher the Orioles can depend on. Tillman worked seven exceptional innings allowing just two hits and winning his 13th game of the season. His great outing enabled the Orioles to break their three-game losing streak with a 6-0 win over the Boston Red Sox before 39063 at Oriole Park on Friday night. The Orioles (58-46) had been held to six runs in their last three losses in Kansas City but quickly got their bats busy against John Lackey (7-8). The offense was great the fielding top-notch but Tillman was even better. “He was a difference-maker tonight” manager Buck Showalter said. “He’s certainly developing quite a track record.” Tillman (13-3) has won 10 games since May 24 and with more than two months left in the season is already the team’s biggest winner since Erik Bedard won 13 in 2007. “If we stay in this and continue to compete it will be because of pitching and people like Chris" Showalter said. Since the Orioles were here last Tillman went to the All-Star Game and had a strong eight-inning outing in Texas. In the last few weeks the Orioles have gotten used to long outings by their pitchers. Just once in the last 13 games has a pitcher gone fewer than six innings. But Tillman has quickly become the team's dominant pitcher. In his last four starts against Boston (61-43) Tillman is 3-0 with an 0.68 ERA. “I think it's a team achievement. It's not me. I think you know it wouldn't have happened if we weren't swinging the bats the way we are; it wouldn't have happened if we weren't playing defense the way we are. I think it goes to show where this team is now opposed to in the past. I think all the pieces are starting to come into place." Tillman was backed with four home runs two by Adam Jones a two-run shot and a solo shots and one each from Manny Machado and J.J. Hardy. The four home runs equal a season high.
