When the Mets first signed Freddy Garcia to a minor league contract, he boastfully proclaimed that the number five starters job was his. In his mind it was never a competition and in fact when asked to comment on it he said, "Either they give me the job or I'll go pitch for someone else."
Garcia started for the Mets today against the Tigers, and according to Bart Hubbuch of the NY Post, "he struggled to reach 85 mph with his fastball." He also added that most of the reading son his fastball from the scouts guns were in the low 80's.
Garcia gave up two runs on two hits and a walk in two innings against a Tigers lineup that featured six minor leaguers.
His ERA now stands at 13.50 Most of the readings on the scout guns were in the low 80s, and one of the Tigers' hits was a long homer by light-hitting Adam Everett out of the No. 9 hole.
