The Miami Marlins hired Tino Martinez as their hitting coach on Thursday to move closer to completing Mike Redmond’s staff.   Martinez is a former star with the New York Yankees and had been working out of the front office and in the broadcast booth for the team in recent years.   This will be Martinez’s first foray into professional coaching outside of being a special instruction during Spring Training for New York in 2008. Martinez replaces Eduardo Perez who recently took a job with the Houston Astros.   The former first baseman has a big task in front of him as he tries to turn around an offense which produced under expectations in 2012.   He does inherit a very talented lineup however including Giancarlo Stanton who could improve even further under Martinez’s tutelage.     One of Martinez’s biggest projects could be Logan Morrison who will be looking to get back to what made him a promising prospect.   In what will be his first season entering as the primary first baseman on the team, Morrison could lean on Martinez for not only hitting advice but also a little help adapting to the position. Known for his consistent and smart play on the field, Martinez is known as a class act and a clubhouse leader.   At one time, he was part of an excellent core in New York during a superb 16 year big league career.   As a four time world champion, Martinez brings a winning attitude and a lot of experience to a relatively young clubhouse that is in need of as many leaders as possible. The Marlins now only need a bench coach and a pitching or bullpen coach to round out the staff for 2013.  Reid Cornelius’ role has not been determined as of yet after he served as bullpen coach in 2012.  If Cornelius is promoted to pitching coach, the Marlins will need to seek a bullpen coach.
